Where are iPhones manufactured? An Introduction to their Global Supply Chain

The iPhone is one of the world’s most popular phones, with Apple shipping almost a quarter billion devices yearly. It captures over half of the US smartphone market. Given such global demand, a lot of people ask how the iPhone gets made and how new models can reach customers every year. So, break down Apple’s increasingly complex global supply chain for the iPhone, from sourcing components to final assembly.

Before Assembly: Where Do iPhone Components Originate?
A long time before an iPhone reaches the assembly stage, it has already started being made. Its components come from networks of suppliers spread across various countries. For instance, the screen of an iPhone may originate in South Korea and come from Samsung or LG. The firm Kioxia has memory component manufacturing plants in Japan, encompassing flash and DRAM. Gorilla Glass, the covering to the screen, is actually produced by Corning through its factories within the USA, Taiwan, or Japan. The A17 Pro chip, designed by Apple, is produced by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) in Taiwan.

Other component parts include significant components such as power management ICs, USB microcontrollers and chipsets for wireless connectivity. Most companies such as Broadcom, Texas Instruments, and many others in Southeast Asia are suppliers of these major components. Apple will also directly source raw materials for its component parts such as the cobalt for the batteries of its machines, which will help ensure that supply chains are not disrupted.

Apple heavily relies on suppliers’ decisions because not only their ability to ensure delivering high-quality results impacts the outcome but also prevent the company from charges and ethical issues.

Apple has been criticized recently for alleged child labor and unethical mining practices of its supply chain, which may serve reputational damage and expensive lawsuits.

Final Manufacturing: Where Are iPhones Manufactured?
For more than a decade, most of the iPhones had been assembled in China, in the massive facility run by Hon Hai Technology Group, also known as Foxconn, in Zhengzhou. It employs over 300,000 workers and produces more than half a million iPhones every day. This scale of operation is likened to the small size of a city by many.

However, with the change in diversification of its supply chain and reliance on a particular country, Apple is shifting production of some to other places. India and Vietnam are coming forward as prime alternatives.
Why Vietnam?
The key strategy advantage Vietnam offers companies like Apple is its geographical positioning to the other countries in the East Asian region that are part of the Apple supply chain, specifically China, Taiwan, and Japan. Additionally, the country benefits from free trade agreements surrounding the region and, being an ASEAN country, makes cross-border trade easier.

Vietnam’s export-oriented economy has become very attractive to companies like Apple, where smaller devices like wired EarPods and AirPods were relocated from China to Vietnam. By 2022, Apple had collaborated with multiple manufacturing companies to produce iPads, MacBooks, and Apple Watches in Vietnam. Even Foxconn, which invested nearly around USD 270 million, had constructed a plant that would manufacture several millions of devices yearly.

Tim Cook’s visit to Vietnam in 2024 served as a demonstration of how important the country has become for Apple. During the visit, Cook announced that his firm was going to pump in more investments into Vietnam, signaling the continued aggressive expansion of local production for the company.

Why is an iPhone produced in India?
Second, India increasingly becomes part of Apple’s global manufacturing strategy. The Indian government initiated the “Make in India” policy in 2020.The plan has incentives offered by the government for smartphone manufacturers to produce their handsets and their accessories locally.

Other Android phone makers like Xiaomi, Samsung, and OPPO have long established their manufacturing bases in the country. So, from this trend, Apple began transrating a portion of its iPhone assembly into the Indian land and more so for its non-Pro editions.

Another reason Apple is stepping up production in India relates to custom tariffs. Imported handsets attract a 22% tax, and iPhones, relatively speaking, become more costlier for the Indian buyers than in other regions. With local production, Apple shall also avoid these duties besides possible lower prices on its iPhone in the country, which shall help the company grow the market share.

Apple started producing iPhone 14 variants in India in 2022. It still constitutes a relatively small percentage of the overall production: five percent of the iPhones shifted from China to the Foxconn Tamil Nadu-based Sriperumbudur factory. What this does, however contributes towards decreasing dependence on Chinese manufacturing units.

The Future of iPhone Manufacturing
At any rate, there isn’t an easy answer to where the iPhone is made. It’s the final product of an international supply chain, sourced with parts from various countries, and assembled in a few centers. Sure enough, China may be an epicenter of assembly, but Apple continues looking for diversification of production in countries like India and Vietnam to minimize risks. A multi-country approach would ensure that Apple can sustain fully meet the demand from all around the world with minimal perceptions of geopolitical and economic pressures.

Thus, the production of the iPhone in the future will escalate because Apple would set up new manufacturing hubs and form stronger ties with other suppliers in all parts of the globe. A globalized production model permits Apple to establish its supremacy over the world’s smartphone industries while being agile in an increasingly evolving world.
