Suresh Raina, born November 27, 1986, in Muradnagar, Uttar Pradesh, is a retired Indian international cricketer known for his aggressive left-handed batting and occasional off-spin bowling. Indeed, Raina’s has been some story of achievements, leadership roles, and passion that has finally etched a mark on Indian cricket.
Early Life and Background
Suresh Raina was born into a Kashmiri Pandit family. His father, Trilokchand Raina, was an army officer, so he had to shift from Rainawari, Srinagar, during the mass exodus of Kashmiri Hindus in the 1990s. The Raina family finally settled in Muradnagar, Uttar Pradesh. He got his schooling at one of the boarding schools and went for his training at Guru Gobind Singh Sports College located in Lucknow. He slowly began to come out into the open with this talent as a cricket player.
Domestic Career
Raina’s cricketing career started off at the domestic level with the Uttar Pradesh cricket team. He led the state Under-16 team, and at 16, made his debut in the Ranji Trophy against Assam in the year 2003. His talent was quite evident early in his career as he rose through ranks really fast. During the 2004 Under-19 World Cup, Raina made a big impression with three half-centuries that caught the attention of the Board of Control for Cricket in India. He was rewarded with a Border-Gavaskar scholarship to train at the Australian Cricket Academy.
He had a lot of fluctuations in his domestic career. In the 2006 Ranji Trophy, he was at his best when he scored 620 runs in just six games. But since then, his form fell, due to which he also gave up the captaincy of the Uttar Pradesh team in 2018. Notwithstanding these odds, it was Raina’s domestic performance that laid the foundation for his successful international career.

International Career
Suresh Raina made his international debut for India in 2005 and soon left his stamp of an aggressive brand of batting. He was a vital middle-order batsman and generally an excellent fielder, often hailed as the best in the Indian team. He holds this unique record of being the first Indian cricketer to score a hundred in all formats of international cricket: Tests, ODIs, and T20s.
Raina played a vital role in India’s winning of the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup. His selection to the playing XI was after he sat out the first initial matches, and he came good in the quarter-final against Australia with an important knock of 34 runs off 28 balls, building a very vital partnership with Yuvraj Singh. The semifinal against Pakistan was no less significant as he added 36 runs and took a vital catch to ensure India’s place in the final.
However, his international career has also been punctuated with failures notably against short-pitched balls, a fact opponents like to exploit. This happened during India’s tour of England in 2011, where he performed very poorly.
Success in the Indian Premier League (IPL)
Raina is almost legendary when it comes to the Indian Premier League. He was one of the major forces behind CSK, their vice-captain, and one of the most consistent performers in the league. He has captained Gujarat Lions during the suspension of CSK from the IPL.

He has numerous records in the IPL, becoming the first player to score 5,000 runs in the tournament and the first Indian to hit 100 sixes. Moreover, he holds the record for the most catches taken in the history of the IPL. He was part of CSK’s success in grabbing several IPL titles; hence, fans like him the most.
Personal Life
Suresh Raina married Priyanka Chaudhary in 2015 and has two children. He is a family man—very close-knit—and has reeled under personal crises, including his uncle’s death in a loot in Punjab, which caused him to withdraw from the 2020 IPL season.
Raina has also been involved in various philanthropic activities and received an honorary doctorate from Vels University in 2022. In 2023, he ventured into the culinary world by opening an Indian restaurant in Amsterdam, showcasing his love for authentic Indian cuisine.
Achievements and Legacy
Throughout his career, Suresh Raina has received many accolades. He is the first Indian player to achieve 6,000 and 8,000 runs in T20 cricket, standing amongst the most successful batsmen in IPL history. To his achievements on the field, he adds leadership qualities in that he has been one of the youngest captains of the Indian cricket team.
One may assume that Raina’s input into Indian cricket has been marginally high across both limited-overs formats. Aggressive batting, exceptional fielding, and the ability to turn up with a performance under pressure have made him almost a cricketing icon. His journey from the streets of Ghaziabad to stardom in cricket makes for quite an interesting story of talent, hard work, and perseverance.
Suresh Raina announced his retirement on the 15th of August, 2020, and that called for the end of the era. However, he did leave back a legacy through which he continues to inspire budding cricketers across the globe. Be it his heroic gestures on the field or off-field ventures, Raina’s life remains as exciting and impactful as ever.
