Many people find dolls confusing, and there are many theories as to why. One theory suggests that suspiciousness stems from a natural human tendency to try to reconcile the doll’s identity with its apparently inanimate status Another theory is that popular culture, through movies and television, has forced us to we associate a living child with negativity.

Dolls in a horror movie

Dolls have been a staple in horror movies for decades, starting with horror ventriloquist dummies. Early films like The Great Gabbo (1929), Dead of Night (1945) explored the unsettling notion of dummies having lives of their own, often as a reflection of their handlers crazy, a concept that continued in the 1963 story “Living Doll” from The Twilight Zone, where a Child named Talkie Tina is terrorized by an abusive father. This phenomenon paved the way for the doll horror subgenre, adding a new layer of horror than ventriloquist dummies.

Dolls that appear in horror films generally fall into two categories: dolls possessed by an outside force or spirit (such as Annabelle from The Conjuring universe), and dolls with a mind of their own and they can move and kill randomly (like the children’s toys that are Chucky). Either way, the child proved to be a terrifying and effective element in a horror story.

Here is a list of the top ten scariest doll-themed movies. This choice relies on films in which the child themselves are active participants in the horror, rather than acting merely as containers for other entities This list does not include child and ventriloquist dummies not included, which could easily fill their own top ten list.
