he Film Federation of India has selected “Laapataa Ladies” as India’s official entry for the 2025 Oscars in the Best Foreign Film category. Directed by Kiran Rao, the film is produced by Kiran Rao, Aamir Khan, and Jyoti Deshpande. It features a mix of emerging talents like Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, and Sparsh Shrivastav, along with established actors such as Chhaya Kadam and Ravi Kishan. This announcement followed a decision made by a jury of 13 members in Chennai.
“Laapataa Ladies” Heading to Oscars 2025

The film was chosen from a group of 12 Hindi, 6 Tamil, and 4 Malayalam films. Having been released earlier this year, “Laapataa Ladies” marked Kiran Rao’s directorial return since “Dhobi Ghat” and was also showcased at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2023.
Expressing her happiness, Kiran Rao shared, “It’s an honor and a tremendous joy that ‘Laapataa Ladies’ has been chosen as India’s official entry for the Academy Awards. This acknowledgment reflects the commitment and effort of my entire team, who worked passionately to bring this story to life. Rao extended her gratitude to the selection committee and acknowledged the honor of being picked among many noteworthy Indian films this year, all of which were strong contenders.
Now, the focus shifts to whether “Laapataa Ladies” will secure a spot on the 97th Academy Awards shortlist.
