Justice Dhananjaya Yeshwant Chandrachud is the 50th Chief Justice of India. Family Background: The Early Years of Childhood
Justice DY Chandrachud was born on 11 November 1959 to a family that feasted on law and culture within the four walls of the family. His father was the longest-serving Chief Justice of India, that is from 1978 to 1985. The mother, Prabha Chandrachud, was a classical musician associated with All India Radio and, thus, could provide for him both the flavor of law and rich culture during his childhood years.
Academic Career
The academic journey of Justice Chandrachud had exposed him to very diverse academic pursuit. His education was at Cathedral and John Connon School, Mumbai and St. Columba’s School, Delhi. In 1979, he graduated with honors in Economics and Mathematics from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, after which law became the career. He remained on good footing after completing LLB from the Faculty of Law, University of Delhi, in 1982 and then continuing LLM and Doctorate in Juridical Sciences-SJD at Harvard Law School to base himself upon for his wonderful profession as well as brilliant legal practices.
Legal Profession And Appointments
He has been in the Bombay High Court and the Supreme Court of India. He was enrolled as a Senior Advocate in 1998 and made Additional Solicitor General of India later. Justice Chandrachud is currently a judge in the Bombay High Court since March 29, 2000, and Chief Justice of India from November 9, 2022.
Major Judgments
This leads to some landmark judgments as some would say that those judgments are because they are given, such as,
- Right to Privacy (2017): Wherein, in Chandrachud guiding the head of the bench declaring that it was a privacy right so hence individual freedom, protected in particular.
- Section 377: He was part of the bench and, through this judgment declaring the section not violative of the consensual same-sex relationship, came out to be one of its kinds for the LGBTQ members.
- Hadiya Case (2018): He voted for the right to choose religion and spouse and said that this would take individual liberty one step further.
- Adultery Law (2018): He is one of the petitioners who challenged Section 497 of the IPC in the name of gender-neutrality for adultery.
- Sabarimala Temple Case (2018): Justice Chandrachud was one of the lawyers who argued that women must be allowed entry into the Sabarimala Temple beyond the existing discriminatory customs.
Personal Life
Justice Chandrachud has also experienced happiness and sorrows in his personal life. His first wife was Rashmi Chandrachud who left this world in the year 2007. Then he married Kalpana Das. They both have two sons, lawyers Abhinav and Chintan. He has two foster daughters also and thus, he proves he is a man with social cause.
He gets a monthly salary of ₹2,80,000 as Chief Justice of India. The private account of wealth is not known but, at least with the money his paycheck covers, it is paid back with every month he served supporting Indian judges and jurors.
