As Saawariya marks its 17th anniversary today (November 9), we’re taken back to the film that introduced Ranbir Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor to Bollywood audiences. Helmed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who also produced it, the film has become a memorable part of Bollywood history. On this special occasion, let’s look back at when Ranbir revealed how he nearly walked away from the project, describing his experience as “torturous” yet acknowledging Bhansali as a “true teacher.”
During a 2016 interview on No Filter Neha, Ranbir Kapoor opened up about the intense filming experience for Saawariya. He shared that Bhansali’s exacting style pushed him to his limits, both physically and emotionally. Ranbir admitted that, at one point, he felt so overwhelmed he considered quitting after nearly a year of hard work. Reflecting on this, he said, “It became so heavy, and I felt so tortured that I almost left the film. Around 10 or 11 months into it, I thought, ‘I can’t do this; it’s getting to me.'”

The actor noted that his sensitive and emotional personality made the process especially challenging. Bhansali, fully understanding his character, continued to push him further, which eventually felt like too much to bear. However, Ranbir also credited Bhansali for significantly shaping his approach to acting, calling him “a true teacher” who taught him valuable lessons in acting and emotional expression.
Sawariya not only launched Ranbir Kapoor’s career but also marked Bollywood legend Anil Kapoor’s daughter Sonam Kapoor career. Released in 2007, it faced stiff competition at the box office from Om Shanti Om. The cast included talented actors like Zohra Sehgal, Begum Para, Vibha Chibber, Atheya Chowdhury and Kenny Desai, adding depth to the story. In addition, Salman Khan played an extended cameo, bringing new star power to the film.

Now Ranbir Kapoor is all set to reunite with Sanjay Leela Bhansali for the eagerly awaited Love and War. Announced in January this year, the film also features Vicky Kaushal and Alia Bhatt in the lead roles and is scheduled to release on March 20, 2026. Fans are excited to see the actor and director duo reunited in a wear promises to be in an exciting new cinematic experience.
