Cricketing Career of Kapil Dev
He marked his international career against Pakistan in Quetta in 1978 when he was just 19 years old. Kapil gave the world a prelude glance of what he could do, and this came in the same series as when he struck the second-fastest fifty by an Indian in Test cricket. For a long career of nearly 16 years, Kapil scored the runs and picked almost 700 wickets in all formats. All this summarised under key career highlights: Test Debut: 1978 vs. Pakistan.
ODI Debut: 1978 vs. Pakistan
- Iconic Knock: 175* vs. Zimbabwe in the 1983 World Cup
- Captaincy: Led India to win the 1983 Prudential World Cup
- Bowling Records: He became India’s first choice Fast bowler with multiple five-wicket hauls of which two against Australia in 1979-80.
1983 World Cup Victory
Kapil, now as captain, went on to take the Indian team to its first ever World Cup title ever. What the doctor had ordered to be prescribed to him for inspirational leadership and all-round performances.
- Batting Stats: Scored 303 runs in 8 matches at an average of 60.60
- Bowling Stats: Took 12 wickets in the tournament
- Match of Life Time: His un-beaten 175* against Zimbabwe in a match-winning situation is one of the most magnificent innings ever played in the history of World Cup.
Kapil’s Bat
Kapil batted with the Slazenger WG bat, which was a bat that had no shoulders to talk of, for that match-winning, historic 175* innings in the 1983 World Cup. This bat was many times mistaken for a mongoose bat.
