Vijay Kumar Rajendran Directed (2022) Tamil Psychological thriller ” D Block ” proves a great watch. The backdrop of an engineering college on the outskirts of Coimbatore, where an inexplicable sequence of incidents cast doubts on the ethos of its student community is what the film is built around.
Plot Overview
Arulnithi plays Arul, an Engineering college student of AKR faculty located in Velliangiri forests, and Avantika Mishra as Shruti his girlfriend. The college has prohibitive rules to shield its students from the threats of the unknown visible and unknown (after news reports did come out about a leopard preying tentatively on female students in D Block hostel corridors). It goes skyrocket when Swathi (Janani Durga), a first-year student goes missing only to be found dead under suspicious facts.

Unraveling the Mystery:
Disturbed by Swathi’s death, Arul and his friends, along with senior student Maya, begin investigating. They discover a pattern of similar incidents over the past few years, all involving female students with long hair. Their investigation brings him to Manimegalai, a student who used to be there and survived an attack but became mentally unstable. She tells us that the college administration had censored her account and diagnosed it as made up.
The Antagonist: Kaali
Kaali (Charandeep) is “The Investigated”, with a horrific past that the investigation reveals of a construction worker.
At the age of a kid, Kaali got into a Hair fetich and he has killed young girls murdering them one by one and doing horrible crimes. From their recent escape from rehabs, he came back again to continue his reign, the girls with long hair targeted at college. His modus operandi of abducting and murdering these students, is due to his literal obsession.
Climactic Confrontation:
The tension peaks when Kaali kidnaps Shruti. Arul and his friends track them to Kaali’s hideout in the forest, managing to rescue Shruti and return to the hostel. However, Kaali pursues them, leading to a final showdown. Despite his physical prowess, the collective effort of the students overpowers Kaali, culminating in his death.

Themes and Critique:
“D Block” attempts to blend elements of horror and thriller genres, exploring themes of institutional negligence and the consequences of unchecked mental illness. However, the film has been critiqued for its execution, with reviewers pointing out shortcomings in writing, casting, and overall narrative coherence. The portrayal of the antagonist, Kaali, has been described as lacking depth, reducing the potential impact of the psychological thriller.
Conclusion:
While “D Block” presents a premise ripe with suspense and intrigue, its execution has garnered mixed reviews. The film serves as a cautionary tale about the repercussions of ignoring warning signs and the importance of addressing mental health issues proactively.
