Bollywood’s Awkward Relationship with On-Screen Intimacy
Bollywood has always had a complicated relationship with depicting intimacy on screen. The industry wants to show it, yet struggles with moral righteousness, creating absolute chaos. How do you convey passion without actually showing it? Bollywood has mastered this bizarre art. From two flowers touching to lingering stares and the infamous shutting of doors, mainstream Hindi cinema has devised countless ways to be suggestive without being explicit.
Due to this hesitant and often exaggerated approach, Bollywood has, at times, delivered some of the most unintentionally hilarious intimate scenes. While they were meant to be steamy, they ended up evoking laughter instead. Though highly misleading in their portrayal, we couldn’t resist compiling this list—because, let’s be honest, we all need a good laugh!
Bollywood’s Most Cringe-Worthy Intimate Scenes
Here are some of the most unintentionally amusing and awkward Bollywood scenes that were supposed to be sensual but missed the mark entirely:
1) Sushmita Sen & Mithun Chakraborty – Chingaari

This scene is peak discomfort. If you ever wondered what could be more visually distressing than Mithun Chakraborty slobbering over former Miss Universe Sushmita Sen’s back, the answer is—probably nothing. The awkwardness is truly next-level, and you have to see it to believe it.
2) Sanjay Kapoor & Neha Dhupia – Julie

This film was infamous for its numerous steamy scenes, most of which we weren’t allowed to watch growing up. Looking back, we’re glad we missed them—especially the moment where Neha Dhupia lies naked on a bed, covered only by a glaring pink blanket (seriously, who owns these?) with I love you scribbled all over her body. The scene was meant to be seductive, but it left us questioning everything instead.
3) Rani Mukerji & Prithviraj – Aiyyaa

Bollywood has a knack for not showing the act but making sure you get the idea. Aiyyaa is a prime example, where every gesture is a double entendre—whether it’s inserting a petrol nozzle or the dramatic spurting of fuel. The symbolism is so obvious, it’s almost comical.
4) Paoli Dam & Joy Sengupta – Hate Story

This movie sparked a wave of erotic thrillers that, quite frankly, didn’t need to exist. The plot revolves around Paoli’s character striving to be the “best prostitute ever.” But the real kicker? She somehow manages to transfer data while, um, being on top of a guy who is completely oblivious to it. Where do we even find such impressively inattentive partners?
5) Om Puri & Mallika Sherawat – Dirty Politics

Inspired by a real-life scandal, the intimate scene in this film is nothing short of nightmare fuel. If you thought some movies shouldn’t have been made, Dirty Politics would likely top that list. The question remains: who approved this script?
While Bollywood has certainly evolved in its portrayal of intimacy over the years, these scenes remain iconic—not for their sensuality, but for their sheer absurdity. Have you watched any of these? Which one made you laugh the hardest?
