Mumbai Indians
Established in 2008, the Mumbai Indians franchise is owned by Mukesh Ambani and Nita Ambani through Reliance Industries. They have won five IPL titles in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020, and their scouting system for the young generation has been sound.
Royal Challengers Bangalore
Founded in 2008, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) is currently owned by United Spirits Limited (Diageo). Initially owned by Vijay Mallya, the franchise changed hands in 2016. RCB, despite reaching three IPL finals (2009, 2011, 2016), is yet to claim a title. The team has attracted massive fame due to its famous cricketing players such as Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers, and Chris Gayle.
Chennai Super Kings
One of the consistent franchises of the IPL is owned by India Cements with its leader, N. Srinivasan. CSK has won four IPL titles since its inception in 2008 (2010, 2011, 2018, 2021). Despite a two-year suspension (2016-2017), CSK bounced back strongly.
Sunrisers Hyderabad
Sunrisers Hyderabad has been the substitute name for the Deccan Chargers since 2012. Kalanithi Maran and his daughter Kavya Maran own this team on the Sun TV Network. It is their maiden title in IPL and they bagged it during the year 2016 as their bowling squad is very hard to break down.
Delhi Capitals
Delhi Capitals was founded in 2008 by Sajjan Jindal and Parth Jindal of the GMR and JSW Groups. The team has not yet won a title but reached the IPL final in 2020 and has been performing well in recent seasons.
Punjab Kings
Co-owned by Ness Wadia, Mohit Burman, Karan Paul, and Preity Zinta, Punjab Kings have been a part of the IPL since 2008. Their best result has been a final reached in 2014; they are yet to win their first title.
Kolkata Knight Riders
Owned by Shah Rukh Khan, Juhi Chawla, and Jay Mehta, KKR has been one of the fan favourites since 2008. They have won three titles for IPL titles with the help of the great Gautam Gambhir in their victories (2012, 2014, 2024).
Rajasthan Royals
The first winners of the IPL in 2008, Rajasthan Royals are primarily owned by Manoj Badale’s Media IPL Ltd. They had faced a two-year suspension in 2015 but have been back on the field since 2018, scouting and nurturing young talent.
Gujarat Titans
The newest franchise that entered the competition in 2022 was Gujarat Titans, who had a debut IPL season. Owned by CVC Capital Partners, they surprised everyone by winning their first season with Hardik Pandya as captain and thus became one of the most powerful contenders.
Lucknow Super Giants
Lucknow Super Giants, a 2022 addition to IPL, is owned by Sanjiv Goenka’s RPSG Group. The team is looking great and did enter the playoffs in its very first season.
