La Liga also known as Primera División is the preeminent professional football division in Spain and a very prestigious football league in the world. Since 1929 La Liga has been the home to great players, intense rivalries, and a rich football history. Presently until the 2024 25 season, some clubs have won the title but only a few have had that consistent success. We look at the top 10 La Liga champions to date which is based on the number of titles won.
1. Real Madrid have won 36 times
As of 2025 Real Madrid is on the summit having won a record 36 La Liga titles. From the mid-1950’s when their stranglehold began until now, what we see is the great players who put on the team’s shirt such as Alfredo Di Stéfano, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Karim Benzema. Also under the charge of great coaches Real Madrid has sustained its reputation as a European power house.
2. FC Barcelona has won 27 titles
FC Barcelona is recognized for their special way of playing and they have also had very successful youth academy programs which has seen them win 27 La Liga titles. At the top of their game from 2008 to 2012 under Pep Guardiola Barca did incredible which included the success of Lionel Messi, Xavi, and Iniesta. Also a feature in the end-of-season title race, Barca is always a strong contender and goes head-to-head with Real Madrid.
3. Atletico Madrid which has won 10
In third is Atlético Madrid which by 2025 will have won 11 championships. They are known for a tough defense and patient play which under manager Diego Sime has at times been impenetrable. The club has been a force in recent years. The 2020-21 title win was a tell tale sign of their return to the top in Spanish football.
4. AC – 8 Titles
Athletic Bilbao has 8 La Liga trophies to their name. For the most part of their success which was in the early and mid 20th century when they were at the top of the game. What makes their achievement even more impressive in today’s tough competitive football is that they have a policy of playing only players of Basque origin.
5. Valencia has won 6 times
In at number five, we see Valencia CF who got there by winning 6 La Liga titles the last of which was in the early 2000s under manager Rafael Benítez. Although they have a large fan base and in past years have produced great talent out of the club recently Valencia has had a hard time in turning that around into success.
