A New Chapter Begins

Mismatched Season 3 comes back with a more mature tone expressing the journeys of Dimple and Rishi as they transition into adulthood. Set three years after the prior season, this season delves into long-distance love, personal ambitions, and emotional conflict in a digital-first world. With a shift in setting from Jaipur to Hyderabad, the show visually and narratively transitions to match the characters’ growth.

Cast and Key Characters

  • Prajakta Koli as Dimple Ahuja: Dimple suffers personal and professional challenges after getting rejected from the top colleges. She is at LLIT, a barely recognized tech institute with Sid Sir, while trying to develop a new app, and trying to recover her confidence and identity.
  • Rohit Saraf as Rishi Singh Shekhawat: Now a successful student, and thriving at the prestigious NNIT, Rishi is more confident and has more academic success. But despite his new success, it feels like the distance and separating agendas between him and Dimple are making it harder to maintain their connection.
  • Taaruk Raina as Anmol Malhotra & Ahsaas Channa as Vinny: The development of Anmol and Vinny’s relationship could be one of the highlights of the season, emotionally speaking. Their emotional availability, vulnerability, and emotional support provide a nice balance to the heavier and emotionally taxing narrative arcs.
  • Lauren Robinson as Rith: A new character who identifies as non-binary, Rith is immersed in technology while struggling with gender, identity, and authenticity. Their narrative introduces themes around virtual identity and the freedom of authorization, in an experimental platform called Betterverse.
  • Supporting Cast: Rannvijay Singha (Sid Sir) and Vidya Malavade (Zeenat) return with the story surrounding life partnership and late parenthood. Dipannita Sharma plays Nandini, a senior authority at NNIT, which adds some spice.

Storyline and Themes

Long-Distance and Emotional Drift

The central conflict of the season derives from Dimple and Rishi’s evolving relationship ebb and flow, much of which is due to their emotional distance with respect to physical distance and personal development. This resonates with many young couples at this time and creates realism and relatability in their challenges.

Technology, Identity, and Belonging

The introduction of Betterverse alludes to a futuristic element related to digital identity and escapism. Rith’s involvement with Betterverse leads to questions about belonging and authenticity in both physical and digital spaces.

Social Commentary

There is more social awareness than in previous seasons in relation to mental health representation, LGBTQ+ representation, and academic pressure. While the season is reflecting important conversations, some story elements feel unresolved/insufficient, or simply too neat for the sake of dramatic richness.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Strengths

  • The lead characters had solid and consistent chemistry.

Final Thoughts

Mismatched Season 3 takes a more meditative look at ideas of growth, identity, and resilience. The other arcs don’t really hit, however, the emotional weight and relatability remain to its core demographic. There is a maturity in tone that fans of the franchise will appreciate, even if there is a lot of safety. All in all, the show continues to track young adulthood, and existing in that ephemeral space of dreaming, love, and self-discovery.
