Top Bauxite-Producing States in India
India endowed with an impressive reserve of around 830 mt of bauxite-the essential raw material for aluminum production. Unlike many who regard it as a mineral, bauxite is rather a rock, and the only commercial source of aluminum. It is produced mainly by the weathering of alumina-rich rocks and desilication of clays, especially where igneous rocks weather down into forms that are more reactive than, say, mica or chlorite.
Bauxite gained its name from its first place of discovery and is bifurcated into the main two types; laterite bauxite and terra rossa bauxite.Laterite soil is concerned with soil that is directly derived from crystalline rock and is rich in gibbsite. The latter is formed over beds of limestone or dolomite and is rich in boehmite.

Let’s now have a look at some Indian states which lead the country’s bauxite production.
1. Odisha
Odisha is the leader in bauxite production since it accounts for nearly three-fourths (76%) of India’s total production. The state has over 1,550 million tonnes of proven reserves of bauxite, mainly in Koraput, Kalahandi, and Baragarh. Two of the largest high-grade deposits are in Panchpatmali (Koraput) and Gandhamardan (Baragarh). Various major mining companies are operating widely across the State, making it a major platform for the national aluminum industry.
2. Jharkhand
Jharkhand has a reserve of about 1.08 billion tonnes of bauxite mainly located in Singhbhum, Kolhan, and Santhal Pargana. The Kodilcha Mines in West Singhbhum contribute nearly 5% to the Indian requirement of bauxite. Despite environmental concerns and legal hurdles related to land acquisition, Jharkhand remains the second-largest producer of bauxite in India.
3. Gujarat
Gujarat’s bauxite reserves are estimated at 62 million tonnes, concentrated in Panchmahal, Dahod, and Vadodara. The state has a strong industrial setup, with major producers like the Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation playing a significant role. Gujarat annually produces about 1,500 million tonnes of bauxite, with regions such as Kutch and Jamnagar serving as major mining hubs. The state’s commitment to sustainable practices has further strengthened its bauxite sector.
4. Chhattisgarh
Chhattisgarh contributes significantly to the country’s bauxite production with reserves totaling 600 million tonnes and an annual yield of around 1,300 million tonnes. The state’s bauxite deposits are found in Surguja, Korba, and Raigarh, which support the local aluminum industry. With an emphasis on eco-friendly extraction and environmental care, Chhattisgarh stands out for its responsible mining approach.
5. Maharashtra
Maharashtra ranks among the top bauxite-producing states, contributing 10% to India’s total output. The state houses around 280 million tonnes of recoverable reserves, particularly in the Kolhapur district. Rich deposits are located in Udgeri, Dhangarwadi, Radhanagari, and Inderganj, with some ores containing up to 89% alumina. These high-quality resources are often found over plateau basalt formations.
Conclusion
India’s bauxite mining industry remains a crucial sector, bolstered by the resource-rich states of Odisha, Jharkhand, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, and Maharashtra. These regions not only contribute vast quantities of bauxite but also lead in implementing sustainable and environmentally conscious mining practices. As India continues to expand its industrial capabilities, the role of these key states will be essential in supporting the nation’s aluminum production and economic growth.
