Meghalaya, which is the “Home of Clouds, is known for its very alive tribal culture and great traditional heritage. In the home to large tribes like the Khasi, Garo, and Jaintia, the state has a very diverse traditional clothing style. What the men and women of Meghalaya wear is designed to fit the hilltop setting and climate, which at the same time does not sacrifice in terms of aesthetic value.

Traditional Dress of Men

In Meghalaya, traditional male wear may differ by tribe, but at the same time, they are very much the same in design and function.

Khasi Men:
Khasi men in general don a type of collarless short coat, out of which the Jymphong is an example; also included in their everyday wear is a dhoti or a waist wrapped cloth. For festivals and special events, the men put on silver accessories and, at times, turbans also.

Garo Men:
In Garo culture, the loincloth is a Dakmanda, which is usually of cotton material with detailed handwoven designs. Also, they put on a sleeveless vest or shirt. At ceremonies, they may bear a traditional weapon like a spear or sword, and also don feathered headgear gear which symbolises valour and tribal pride.

    Jaintia Men:
Their traditional wear is similar to what the Khasi tribe wears. They don’t put on full-length tunics, which are richly embroidered and a dhoti or a wrap around the waist. For special events, they add a turban and accessories to the look.

      Traditional Dress of Women

In Meghalaya, women are very much known for their colourful and graceful attire, which, although different in tribes, has a sense of elegance and modesty.

      Khasi Women:
Khasi women put on a multi-layer dress, which is in fact two large pieces of cloth draped around the body. For festivals, they wear the Tapmoh Khnam, which is a decorative silk piece on the shoulder. Also, they put on heavy silver and gold jewellery, which includes the Kynjri Ksiar, made of gold that enhances their grace.

      Garo Women:
The traditional wear for Garo women is the Dakmanda, which they wrap around their waist and which falls below the knee. Also, they go with a complementary top which is the same colour and pattern and which they accessorise with the Daksari, a handwoven cloth which they throw over their shoulder. They go for bold and bright attires which feature tribal motifs. Also very much a part of their look are the jewellery pieces, which include bangles, bead necklaces and earrings.

      Jaintia Women:
Jaintia women put on a style of dress which is much like that of the Khasi, but in lighter and more delicate fabrics. They also wear the Jainsem, which here is often draped in different styles and in lighter pastel colours. Also, they have traditional jewellery and hair accessories which finish off their elegant look.

        Conclusion

In Meghalaya, traditional clothing for men and women goes beyond what is worn; it is a living embodiment of our rich heritage, tribal pride, and deep connection to nature. At festivals, weddings, and dances, these traditional garments personify the spirit and identity of Meghalaya’s indigenous people with grace and dignity.
