The Kingdom of Wessex, the foremost of the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, was established in England post-Roman rule. It was first settled in the fifth and sixth centuries, and its domain eventually extended over present-day Hampshire, Wiltshire, Dorset, and Somerset in the south of England. The early kings of Wessex used various methods such as warfare, settlement, and alliances to gain control of the region, thereby setting the stage for a kingdom that would turn out to be superior and influential for many centuries.
At the very beginning of its development, Wessex was one of several kingdoms competing for power along with Mercia, Kent, and Sussex, the biggest and most powerful Anglo-Saxon kingdoms at the time. The power balance in England changed very often, but Wessex gradually gained more and more strength. By the 8th and 9th centuries, the kingdom had become the most powerful in southern England, where it took advantage of good leadership and efficient military structure. Among the factors contributing to its power was also its ability to endure the decline of rival kingdoms.
Wessex was going through a critical phase when Alfred the Great came to power, since the whole country was under great pressure coming from the Vikings and in fact the king’s territory was being invaded. Alfred had a thorough plan and reorganized the army, fortified the areas around the towns and cities and by doing so he also conquered the legal and bureaucratic side of things. He went on to advocate education and learning, thus man’s knowledge was protected in times of great chaos and destruction. Under Alfred’s leadership, Wessex was able to fend off being conquered and remain independent while almost all the other parts of England were taken over by the Vikings.
The Path to a United Kingdom
After Alfred, his successors did not stop expanding Wessex but rather continued to do so, thus going beyond the original borders of the kingdom. The neighbouring lands of King Edward the Elder and Æthelstan were considered their domains, and thus the Anglo-Saxon and Viking regions became one. By the beginning of the 10th century, Æthelstan was the ruler of almost all England and is thus considered the first king of the united English kingdom.
Historical Legacy
Wessex was the kingdom that delivered England through to its formation. The region’s rulers built a warlike and very powerful kingdom from a collection of small kingdoms through military power and clever governance. The history of Wessex still remains a major part of the history of Anglo-Saxon England and the emergence of the English state.
