In the very competitive world of international cricket, which is a stage for the best of the best, we see a few players who truly stand out in all aspects of the game. Deepti Sharma is that rare talent who has become a mainstay of the Indian Women’s National Team. From the small town fields of Agra to the great stages of international sports, she has proven herself through hard work, family support, and a very present love for the game.
At first experiences and early interest.
Born into a middle-class family in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, Deepti Sharma was the youngest of seven siblings. Her father, Bhagwan Sharma, was a chief booking officer with Indian Railways, which was the mother’s role which she filled while also running home affairs. Deepti’s entry into the world of cricket was almost by chance. At just 9 years old, she went along to a father-son family affair to a training session, which in fact was her first contact with the game.

While from the stands, a wayward ball made its way to her. With ease and grace, she threw it back, right at the stumps. That instance of skill which stood out was noticed by talent scouts and local coaches, which in turn marked the start of a great career for her. Her family also recognised her talent very soon, and with her brother’s guidance, Deepti began her formal training.
The Rise to National Prominence
Deepti’s rise through domestic cricket was very quick. What she brought to the team as a left-hand batter and a right-arm off-spinner was very valuable. In Nov 2014, at Bengaluru against South Africa, she made her One Day International (ODI) debut. Many debutants do break under the international stage pressure, but Deepti showed a maturity that defied her age.
In 2017, at the time of her breakthrough on the world stage, which came out during a quadrangular series, Deepti Sharma and Poonam Raut put together a great opening stand of 320 runs against Ireland. Also to note is that Deemi’s individual score of 188, which is one of the highest in Women’s ODIs, secured her place as a powerful player at the top of the order.
World Cup Heroics and Global Recognition
In 2017, during the Women’s World Cup, which was a turning point for women’s cricket in India, Deepti was right in the middle of it. She was a consistent player throughout the tournament, which saw her finish as the team’s top wicket taker and also contribute vital runs in the middle order. India’s final at Lord’s came out slightly defeated against England; the team’s performance lit up a new era of support for the sport in the country.
Deepti has been very consistent, which has paid off. In the field of Indian sports, for her great work, she was presented with the Arjuna Award. It is her cool-headed performance in what is known as the death overs and also her tactical skills that have made her a key player in all forms of the game, which includes T20 and the Women’s Premier League (WPL).
A Legacy in the Making
Today, in the present, Deepti Sharma is known for more than her statistics, which she puts up; she is known for what we may term her cricketing intelligence. Her sharp fields, her deceptive spin, and the way she anchors an innings are what define the modern all-rounder in her.
Her story is a lighthouse of hope for young girls in rural India. It also shows that with the right mix of talent and hard work, you can look past barriers and achieve the top in world sports. As Deepti keeps breaking records and winning matches for India, her “unsaid” journey is a great source of pride for a nation that lives for cricket.
