When Natasha Poonawalla is brought up, what comes to mind is high fashion red carpets, interaction with Bollywood’s best and an effortless glamorous lifestyle. But looking into her background, what is presented is a more complex picture of a very present individual. As an executive director, philanthropist, and hands-on mother, she is at once a public figure and a private person, shouldering great corporate and humanitarian responsibilities.
Formative Years and Academic Foundation
Born in Pune, India, on November 26, 1981, to Pramesh and Minnie Aurora, Natasha grew up in a very educational setting. While she reports having gone through the typical young person’s career confusion, she did very well in school.
She attended St. Mary’s School in Pune and also received her Bachelor’s degree from Savitribai Phule Pune University. By a large margin, it is reasonable to say that she did not attend great summer programs in the U.S. at Cornell, Stanford, and Harvard, which in turn led to her Master’s degree at the London School of Economics. This in-depth academic background, which she had, is what prepared her for the global business and philanthropic issues that she would go on to manage.
Leadership in Global Health.
Today, at the head of the Serum Institute of India, which is the world’s largest producer of vaccines, we have Natasha Poonawalla, who is a key member of the executive team. What she does goes way beyond what is expected of a Chief Executive Director. Also, she heads up Serum Life Sciences, which is a unit that is into the research, development and supply of vaccines that are meant to fight off global pandemics.
During the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, which was a very tough time for her, which also brought to the fore very personal issues like the health of her son, who has asthma, which at times is more trying, she put in that extra effort to put in place health care structures for the affected. Under her lead, the company not only scaled up vaccine production, but also saw the company play a large role in the outreach effort to get out food, PPE and diagnostic testing kits to Indian populations.
