Top 20 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 2026
Nothing very much had grasped the heart of India until you saw through the high stone archways of its ancient monuments. We go beyond the academic in our celebration of these sites; we also go into the emotional. From the US list of amazing locations, here is my very subjective tour, which presents to you a selection of 20 dazzling UNESCO World Heritage Sites that, in 2026, still capture the world’s eye.
1. The Taj Mahal, Uttar Pradesh
This is what has made it the greatest symbol of love! I was first drawn to the grand white marble structure on a beautiful morning at sunrise. It was built by Emperor Shah Jahan in honour of his wife Mumtaz Mahal and should be put forward as the finest example of Mughal architecture for its perfect symmetry.
2. Agra Fort, Uttar Pradesh
At the foot of the Taj, this huge red sandstone fort is a living history book. In terms of the grand scale of the audience halls, which include the Diwan-i-Khas, we are able to picture in our minds royal audiences of long ago.
3. Ajanta Caves, Maharashtra
The 29 Buddhist caves are a marvel of ancient art, carved into the horseshoe-shaped rock gorges of the Sahyadri ranges. In them are included what may at first be hard to believe walls painted with no use of the colour blue at all, yet what is displayed is beyond the thinkable skill of the monks, which they put in it during the Vakataka rule.
4. Ellora Caves, Maharashtra
From the Ajanta, which is a short distance by car, to Ellora, which has little to prepare for the spectacle of Cave 16, the Kailasanatha temple. That was hewn out of a single piece of rock from top to bottom and is truly a great feat of Lord Shiva’s, which outdoes modern engineering.

5. Group of Monuments at Hampi, Karnataka
Hampi is very close to my heart; it is my top choice for backpacking. The ruins of the last, which was the Vijayanagara Empire’s capital, are large-scale and out of the ordinary, as one would see in a fantasy story.
6. Sun Temple, Konark, Odisha
Built into a grand stone chariot that presents twelve sets of very detailed wheels, this temple of the Sun God, Surya, is a masterpiece of spatial arrangement and architectural balance.
7. Khajuraho Group of Monuments, Madhya Pradesh
During the Chandella rule, they built out, which the world today is very much aware of for their sculptural style and also for what they express. Also, at that time, there was some degree of religious amity between the Hindu and Jain temples’ histories, which are very much worth noting.
8. Kaziranga National Park, Assam
In the heart of living nature, Kaziranga is a private paradise for wildlife enthusiasts. I will always remember that time I saw a great elephant and a one-horned rhino emerging from tall elephant grass.
9. Mahabodhi Temple Complex, Bodh Gaya, Bihar
To be in the presence of the Bodhi tree, under which the historical Gautama Buddha achieved his Nirvana, is an experience of a lifetime. In a complex, that is a temple of brick, the peace is thick.
10. Rani-ki-Vav, Gujarat
The idea here is not a stepwell but an inverted temple, which instead focuses on the sanctity of the water in the earth. Also it has a below ground structure which is made up of what are in total over a hundred main sculptures of divine figures.

11. Red Fort Complex, Delhi
This icon of early independent India is made of red sandstone and is the epitome of Mughal creativity, which in turn blends Persian architecture with Indian art.
12. Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, Mumbai
Each time I am on a train in this city, I am struck by its architecture. What we have is a wonderful mix of High Victorian Gothic revival and the usual Indian palace elements.
13. Great Living Chola Temples, Tamil Nadu
The Chola kings’ temples are great works which display their outstanding contributions in the field of bronze work, architectural brilliance and timeless structural design.
14. Hill Forts of Rajasthan
Built out of military necessity, defensive skills, urban planning and court culture of the Rajput kings, this amazing set, which includes Jaisalmer and Chittorgarh.
15. Historic City of Ahmedabad, Gujarat
The city is a living museum of the past, which has very dense traditional homes, what we also know as pols, and geheugen streets that provide you a fantastic look into what urban life was like in ancient times.
16. Archaeological Site of Nalanda Mahavihara, Bihar
A tour of these ruins brings out our great past in fields of education and philosophy.
17. Churches and Convents of Goa.
The Basilica of Bom Jesus, which is of great historical importance and which also houses many beautiful examples of Baroque art, is a large-scale structure that saw a transformation in architectural styles in Asia.
18. Rock Shelters of Bhimbetka, Madhya Pradesh
The amazing shelters, which take us back to the very beginning of human expression and which feature the art of the first human inhabitants, date back thousands of years.
19. Mountain Railways of India
It is a pleasure to ride these antique toy trains through the winding hills. The slope is great, and the mist adds to the atmosphere. A great achievement of the 19th century in transport, which still brings smiles to travellers’ faces.
20. Humayun’s Tomb, Delhi
This magnificent tomb is the very first grand garden tomb in the subcontinent and the direct architectural model for the Taj Mahal, a peaceful place in the heart of a modern capital.
