Know About The Best Vegetarian Restaurants In Ho Chi Minh City
When it comes to food exploration, HCMC is the best. I have always been a huge fan of the street food scene and the complex flavors of Vietnamese cuisine which has a very special place in my heart my family actually teases that I could live off of great broth and fresh herbs.
While in Saigon which is known for its meat focused street food scenes the city has in fact transformed into a haven for plant based travelers. Out there it can be a little bit of a ride trying to find what you are looking for in terms of vegetarian and vegan options which is why I have put together this very personal guide to the best (and also some which may leave a lot to be desired) plant based spots in the city.
Unmissable Breakfast & Coffee Fixes
Hot Beans Coffee & Cuisine
In the thick of District 1 action is Hot Beans, which is great for starting your energetic morning. If you are one of many that have trouble finding dairy alternatives while traveling in Southeast Asia as I do you will be over the moon to see they feature oat milk on their menu. Their iced oat Americano is smooth and rich, which in turn brings out the best in Vietnamese coffee tradition. For breakfast try their avocado toast, which comes with homemade baked beans a very unexpected but very welcome take on a classic.

Chay 365
If at the end of your trip you are looking for that real cultural experience then go to Chay 365. In Vietnamese, “chay” means to fast or be on a vegetarian diet, which is what this fully vegan restaurant is all about; they serve up amazing street food. Try their banh mi’s, which are to die for — also the spicy tofu and mixed plant-based meats version is a must. Also while you are there try there salted coffee with oat milk. That may sound out there but the mix of dark espresso, cocoa powder and salt creates a taste like an upgraded iced mocha.
Hidden Gems and British Comforts
Veggie Saigon Restaurant
This charming little spot on the first floor is a gem in terms of affordable dining in the city. The two female owners are so warm; they greet each and every guest with bright smiles, which immediately put you at ease as if you are family. They prepare very well seasoned dishes which also include a unique vegan “fish” and savory vegan pork chops with pak choi. While the mock meats are to die for, what really pulls you it is the authentic and comforting atmosphere which also doesn’t hit you in the pocket.
Filthy Vegan
Sometimes after weeks of light dining on delicate broths you may find yourself yearning for simple pleasures. In a 2nd district corner of the city which also happens to be home to a large community of long time British expats is where you’ll find Filthy Vegan; a — at times out of the ordinary wonderful spot. They import from the UK to bring over traditional English classics (like the classic Heinz baked beans) to put their own vegan twist on incredible fish and chips, and also the hearty steak and kidney pie with plenty of rich gravy. It is the place to go if you are looking to meet up with other travellers in a casual setting while you scratch that comfort food itch.

A Few Words of Caution
Not all culinary hits out of the park. If you drop in at Bon’s Vegan Bistro for a cool respite from the afternoon heat, order only what is hot and fragrant, like their mushroom pho. Also their iced cashew milk coffee which they sweeten with dates is very bitter, and we recommend you stay away. As for a change of pace at Tandoor Indian Restaurant, which you are seeking from the local fare, do with care what you put on your plate. Even if you think of yourself as a hot sauce connoisseur their medium spiced dishes bring out the fire in you and may just put out your meal!
