The issue of gender disparity within Bollywood has long been a topic of discussion and contention. Zoya Akhtar, who is currently preparing for the release of “The Archies,” has recently addressed this matter, suggesting that female actors may not be entirely willing to shoulder the responsibility of leading films.

A prominent driving factor behind the predominance of male protagonists in Bollywood is the belief that movies featuring male leads tend to perform better at the box office. The topic of gender disparity in Bollywood has been a recurrent subject of scrutiny and debate over the years. Zoya Akhtar, in a recent conversation with Film Companion, expressed her perspective on women taking on significant roles in major projects, drawing from her own experiences. She noted that many actresses are hesitant to bear the weight of carrying a film and often inquire, “Who is the male lead in the film?”
While there have been notable improvements in the industry with regards to offering more opportunities for female actors and portraying empowered and diverse female characters, an evident imbalance still exists between the number of films featuring male leads and those with female leads. Zoya believes that female actors themselves may harbor reservations, as many of them prefer to be part of a hero-led film rather than taking the lead themselves.
Zoya’s comments come in response to director Hansal Mehta’s observation that while Sanjay Leela Bhansali successfully entrusted “Gangubai Kathiawadi” to Alia Bhatt, not many filmmakers are able to secure the necessary financing for such projects.

In the midst of these discussions, Zoya’s upcoming film, “The Archies,” is set to introduce seven newcomers to the industry, including Agastya Nanda, Suhana Khan, Khushi Kapoor, Mihir Ahuja, Vedang Raina, Aditi ‘Dot Saigal, and Yuvraj Menda. This teen musical comedy is based on the American comic book series of the same name and is produced by Tiger Baby Productions, with Zoya Akhtar at the helm. The film is slated for release on December 7 on a streaming platform.
