Set in the fictitious realm of Nirmal Pradesh circa 2001, the narrative unfurls against a backdrop where mobile phones were a luxury and train travel was marked by frequent stops. The story commences with Phool Kumari, a hesitant bride, embarking on a train journey to her marital home accompanied by her jovial husband, Deepak, setting the stage for a poignant tale to unfold.

As the train carriages teem with newlywed couples, conversations about dowry pervade the air, with Deepak exhibiting reticence while others boast unabashedly. Amidst this, viewers are introduced to another couple, Pardeep and Jaya, both veiled brides.

Upon arrival at their respective destinations, a hasty mistake sees Deepak inadvertently taking the hand of the wrong bride, leaving Phool stranded on the train. Meanwhile, Phool finds herself abandoned at Pateela station, realizing she’s lost and vulnerable.

Director Kiran Rao deftly portrays Pradeep as an antagonist, possibly implicated in his first wife’s demise and callously indifferent to losing his second wife, all for the sake of retaining the dowry.
