Thangam, a well-known criminal, gained notoriety for his involvement in a variety of criminal undertakings. This article will delve into Thangam’s life, exploring his upbringing, criminal exploits, and the ties between Thangam and the film KGF.
Thangam’s Early Life and Criminal Ventures:
Born in Karnataka to a mother named Paulina or Pouli, Thangam earned a reputation for his criminal activities, earning him the moniker “Veerappan Junior” as the second most infamous criminal after the sandalwood smuggler Veerappan. Reports from that era indicated that Thangam had committed 42 offenses in just four years.
One significant incident involved Thangam stealing jewelry and other valuables totaling Rs 1.5 lakhs from a store on December 2. This act brought him to the attention of law enforcement, resulting in shoot-at-sight orders and causing a considerable embarrassment to the police force.
Despite his criminal pursuits, Thangam garnered local support by sharing his wealth with the community and assisting the impoverished. Similar to Veerappan, he was often likened to the “Robin Hood” of the region.

Thangam’s Confrontation and Demise:
With shoot-at-sight orders in place, Thangam’s life took a tragic turn when he was killed by the KGF (Kolar Gold Fields) police on December 27, 1997, in Kuppam of Chittoor in Andhra Pradesh. Following his demise, the police also encountered three of Thangam’s brothers – Sagayam, Gopi, and Jayakumar.
The film KGF, directed by Prashanth Neel, shares certain parallels with Thangam’s narrative. However, it is essential to note that the movie is largely fictionalized. In the film, the character Rocky draws inspiration from his mother, mirroring Thangam’s strong bond with his mother Paulina. Additionally, Thangam’s gang was often referred to as the “Pouli gang” in the media, recognized for their criminal activities in and around the KGF region.
Conclusion:
While there are resemblances between Thangam’s life and the movie KGF, it’s crucial to recognize that the film is primarily a work of fiction. Thangam’s biography highlights his criminal pursuits, local support, and his eventual encounter with the police. The connection between Thangam and KGF adds an intriguing layer to the fictional world depicted in the movie.
