Vidya Balan recently disclosed that she faced skepticism when she agreed to portray Silk Smitha in The Dirty Picture, with warnings that it could harm her career. Renowned for her impactful performances, particularly in challenging roles like Silk Smitha, for which she earned a National Film Award, Vidya shared the discouragement she encountered regarding her choice to take on the film. Reflecting on this during a session at the 54th International Film Festival of India in Goa, she discussed the reactions she received and how she responded to concerns about the potential negative impact on her career.
Some individuals cautioned Vidya, expressing doubts about her decision and suggesting that it might spell the end of her career. Responding to this, Vidya emphasized that being labeled as “Miss Goody Two Shoes” holds little value, especially as she’s still exploring different roles early in her career. She reaffirmed her commitment to acting, stating that taking on diverse challenges is an integral part of her journey.
Recalling the initial offer to play Silk, Vidya expressed disbelief when Milan Luthria first approached her for the role. She humorously remarked, In a humorous tone, she commented, “When Milan Luthria initially approached me, I thought, ‘Have you knocked on the wrong door (Are you sure about it)?’ Because I wouldn’t believe that someone would actually offer me this role.” Despite the skepticism, Vidya felt a burning desire to undertake unconventional roles and prove herself in ways that others might not have envisioned.
“The Dirty Picture” is a biographical musical drama centered on the life of Silk Smitha. Directed by Milan Luthria, the film was distributed in Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi worldwide. Apart from Vidya Balan, the cast included Emraan Hashmi, Naseeruddin Shah, and Tusshar Kapoor. Vidya’s portrayal received acclaim from critics, earning her accolades for her compelling performance.
