Shah Rukh Khan’s latest cinematic offering, “Dunki,” has captivated audiences with its emotionally charged yet entertaining narrative. The film delves into the realm of illegal immigration, specifically focusing on the perilous practice known as donkey flight. The narrative commences by introducing three central characters: Manu (played by Taapsee Pannu), Buggu (Vikram Kochhar), and Balli (Anil Grover). Driven by the desire to alleviate their families’ dire circumstances, they resolve to travel to London, earning in pounds to support their loved ones. In pursuit of visas, they enlist the services of an agent who assures them success even without meeting the official requirements.
Enter Hardy (portrayed by Shah Rukh Khan), on a quest to locate Mahinder, the man who saved his life during a war. Hardy seeks to return a tape recorder as a token of gratitude but discovers a tragic twist when he reunites with Mahinder’s sister, Manu, revealing Mahinder’s demise in an accident.
Hardy, compelled to assist Manu in her quest for a wrestling coach to secure a visa, discovers the duplicitous nature of the agent, who absconds. Undeterred, Hardy devises a legal path for their London journey via a student visa. The group enrolls in an English learning class, encountering Sukhi (Vicky Kaushal), aiming to rescue his love, Jassi, trapped in a problematic marriage.
After an unsuccessful attempt at the IELTS exams, the group learns of the Dunki option, an illegal means facilitated by Gulati (Boman Irani). Tragedy strikes when news of Sukhi’s failure reaches Jassi, leading to her tragic demise. In grief, Sukhi immolates himself.
Observing these events, Hardy resolves to take Manu to London via Dunki. Their challenging journey unfolds, leading them to London, where the harsh reality of life as illegal immigrants sets in. Despite attempts to legalize their status, they face arrest, with a glimmer of hope emerging in the form of seeking asylum due to threats in India.
While some agree, Hardy, a former soldier, declines and faces deportation. The film fast-forwards 25 years, portraying Manu’s plea for assistance from a dying bed. Succumbing to their old ways, the trio, along with others, resorts to Dunki to return to India. Back in their homeland, 60-year-old Hardy finally proposes to Manu, who accepts but passes away shortly after.
In the aftermath, Hardy, Buggu, and Balli ponder their future in Laltu, their village. “Dunki” concludes with a poignant message highlighting how stringent migration laws disproportionately affect the impoverished, denying them opportunities for a better life.
Notably, revelations on X (formerly Twitter) disclose a special cameo in the post-credit scene featuring Circuit and Rancho, beloved characters from director Rajkumar Hirani’s cinematic universe.
