Kangana Ranaut, the renowned Bollywood actress, had expressed her interest in contesting in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Amidst her preparations for the release of “Emergency,” where she portrays the role of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, Ranaut anticipates a resurgence in her career trajectory. The film, a biographical-historic drama set against the backdrop of India’s Emergency era, is expected to provide her with a much-needed boost after a string of disappointing box office performances.

Speculation on Political Entry
Ranaut’s inclination towards politics has long been a subject of speculation, given her vocal commentary on current affairs. Despite her occasional contradictory statements regarding her political aspirations, she has been persistently linked to a potential political career.
During a recent event for the trailer launch of the upcoming movie “Razakar: Silent Genocide Of Hyderabad,” Ranaut was asked about her plans to pursue the Prime Minister’s office. Responding with her characteristic wit, she quipped, “I just did a film called Emergency. After watching that movie, nobody will want me as the Prime Minister,” before sharing a laugh.
In February 2023, Ranaut clarified her stance on politics, stating that while she holds political ideologies, she does not consider herself a political figure. However, she remained open to the possibility of entering politics, contingent upon public demand.
Oscillation in Political Statements
Ranaut’s stance on entering politics has witnessed fluctuations over time. While she initially expressed openness to political participation during an interview at Panchayat Aaj Tak in October 2022, she later emphasized the importance of public endorsement for such a move.
In November 2023, Ranaut took a more definitive stance, expressing her desire to directly contest in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, albeit with a touch of spirituality, stating, “Shri Krishna ki kripa rahi to ladenge (If Lord Krishna blesses, I will fight).”
Film Ventures and Box Office Challenges
“Emergency,” initially scheduled for release in November 2023, will now have a global release on June 14, 2024. Produced by Ranaut herself, the film boasts a star-studded cast including Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, and others.

Ranaut’s recent film endeavors, however, have faced significant challenges at the box office. “Tejas,” her last appearance in the action thriller genre, underperformed commercially, following the trend of her preceding films “Chandramukhi 2” and “Dhaakad.” Despite these setbacks, Ranaut remains undeterred in her pursuit of both cinematic excellence and potential political endeavors.
