Sharmin Segal, a rising star who captivated audiences in Sanjay Leela Bhansali‘s “Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar,” recently addressed the online criticism she faced regarding her performance. The series, released on Netflix last month, continues to spark discussion, with each character garnering a spectrum of responses. While some praised the show’s ensemble cast, Segal unfortunately became a target for negativity, accused of lacking emotional expression and displaying coldness towards co-stars.

The barrage of online vitriol became so overwhelming that Segal was forced to disable comments on her social media platforms. However, in a recent interview with News 18 Showsha, she chose to break her silence and acknowledge the importance of audience feedback.

Segal emphasized the audience’s power, referring to them as the “king” in the creative realm. She recognizes their right to express their opinions, both positive and negative, and acknowledges the value this feedback brings: “That’s one thing that gives me perspective and allows me to be okay.”

Beyond the negativity, Segal remains focused on the positive aspects of her experience. She poured her heart and soul into portraying the character of Alamzeb, and she chooses to celebrate the show’s overall reception. “We tend to fixate on the negatives,” she shared, “but there are so many positives that have also come along, which we don’t talk about.”

Initially, Segal admitted to distancing herself from online discussions surrounding her performance. But upon revisiting the commentary, she realized she was overlooking the outpouring of support. This newfound awareness has led her to actively seek positive feedback, recognizing its potential to shape her as an artist: “The audience’s opinion is what will probably help you be the best version of yourself.”

Segal acknowledges that being an actor inherently exposes one to a range of feedback, including positivity, criticism, and everything in between. She embraces this inevitability, viewing it as a learning opportunity: “Opinions shape you as an actor and a human being. These are actual humans responding to you, and it makes you realise how many people you can reach. These opinions are very important.”

Despite the mixed response, Segal finds joy in the show’s global reach. “Heeramandi” has introduced her to a wider audience than she could have ever imagined, and it’s sparked renewed interest in her debut film, “Malaal.” Segal shared her delight at “Malaal” re-entering the top ten most-watched shows following “Heeramandi’s” release. This global connection with audiences is a positive takeaway for the actress.

“Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar” boasts an impressive ensemble cast alongside Segal, including established stars like Manisha Koirala, Richa Chadha, Aditi Rao Hydari, and Sonakshi Sinha. The series continues to be a talking point, a testament to Bhansali’s artistry and the captivating performances of its actors.
