What transpired in Junaid Khan’s debut film?
Maharaj kicks off with the introduction of Karsandas Mulji, a young boy born into a Gujarati family who is unafraid to challenge societal customs. As he gains more knowledge, he stays a devout person who believes in the divine. After his mother’s passing, Karsandas relocates to Bombay to live with his maternal relatives, where he pursues studies in journalism. He soon evolves into a reformer, writing articles in newspapers championing women’s empowerment.

In Bombay, there exists a mansion housing the main temple of Lord Krishna. Among the esteemed priests of this temple is Jadunath Maharaj, also known as JJ (portrayed by Jaideep Ahlawat), who commands the most followers. On various occasions, JJ selects a girl from the crowd to serve him. Serving involves dedicating herself and engaging in sexual relations with the priest. When Kishori, Karsandas’ fiancée, is chosen by Maharaj, he rebels. However, Kishori, who venerates JJ, disregards him. It doesn’t take long for her to realize her exploitation. Consequently, Kishori ends her life, leaving a note for Karsandas to apologize and urging him to fight against such practices and eradicate them from society.
After Kishori’s death, Karsandas openly challenges JJ to reveal his true nature. He starts his own newspaper, but JJ thwarts him at every turn, even preventing its distribution. Despite his numerous efforts, JJ is unable to stop Karsandas. Throughout his battle against JJ, Karsandas is abandoned by his family. However, he has the support of his mentor, Dadabhai Naoroji, Viraj (played by Sharvari Wagh), a prominent priest from the mansion, and others.
Maharaj ending: Does Karsandas prevail in the case?
Karsandas showcases the power of journalism, aiming to raise awareness about the practice of serving JJ. As JJ observes the impact of Karsandas’ persistent efforts, he retaliates by filing a defamation lawsuit against him, seeking a substantial fine. While many oppose him, JJ’s wife clandestinely supports Karsandas. JJ employs every means to prevent Karsandas from assembling more witnesses.

Maharaj’s climax features a courtroom showdown between Karsandas and JJ. A vast crowd gathers outside the court, backing the priest. His devotees ensure he doesn’t walk barefoot. Inside, JJ defies the norms and attempts to intimidate Karsandas’ lawyer. When no one stands by Karsandas, JJ’s physician steps forward as a witness against the societal practice. When no one stands by Karsandas, JJ’s physician agrees to testify against the societal practice. He discloses that Maharaj has syphilis from his multiple sexual encounters. However, the spiritual leader denies the allegations and dismisses the doctor’s claims.
When all else fails, Karsandas delivers an impassioned speech in court that inspires many women to come forward and speak out against JJ. Initially, his sister-in-law testifies, followed by many others. Several men also support their wives and sisters in condemning the practice. Over seven days, 32 witnesses come forward, resulting in the Bombay Supreme Court dismissing the defamation case and launching criminal proceedings against JJ. Ultimately, the public grasps Karsandas’ message.
