Overview

The film revolves around a beautiful 13-year-old girl whose life takes a tragic turn. Taken from the safety and affection of her family, Lakshmi is thrust into a life of trauma and fear, a violent nightmare for any young woman. And Lakshmi is merely a child.

Lakshmi is abducted and separated from her father and siblings, and sold to the Reddy brothers, the perilous front men for a network in human trafficking.

Being so young, she is isolated from the other girls and brought to the elder Reddy’s residence, where she is deceived into a false sense of safety, and then brutally assaulted by Reddy. Afterwards, she is sent to a brothel owned by the brothers.

At the brothel, Lakshmi meets Swarna, a pragmatic, tough, spirited girl and Jyoti, the “tough love” madam who manages the brothel for the Reddy brothers. Swarna and Jyoti, familiar with the harsh realities of the brothel and having been institutionalised, guide Lakshmi on the basics.

As Lakshmi’s housemate, Swarna assists her in coping with the humiliation of being a sex worker. But Lakshmi is unwilling to accept her plight. She refuses to reconcile with the horror of her circumstances. Yet, her repeated attempts at fleeing only serve to highlight the hopelessness of her situation – that there is no escape, and nowhere to run!. Disheartened, she resigns herself to her fate.

Lakshmi begins to view the brothel as her dwelling. The child Lakshmi fades away, lost in the chaos of the flesh market. She turns to alcohol and the other girls for support, to bear the weight of her existence.

Eventually, a glimmer of hope arrives with Uma—a social worker who periodically brings aid to the girls in the form of sweets, necessities, medication, compassion, and love. She informs Lakshmi that she has located her family. With renewed hope, Lakshmi attempts to escape once more. However, this time she is captured by the younger and far more ruthless Reddy brother.

One such ‘client’ is Mohan. As part of an NGO against women trafficking and collaborating with Uma, Mohan orchestrates a sting operation to rescue the girls. All they need is a witness, just one woman willing to testify against the Reddy brothers in court—but they do not find one!

Lakshmi is the story of a chilling reality that haunts women from impoverished backgrounds. But it is also the true tale of a child whose spirit could not be shattered. A hero in a land full of cowards, whose bravery and determination ultimately triumph over malevolence.
