Three (Survival Island) is a romantic thriller directed by Stewart Raffill, starring Billy Zane, Kelly Brook, and Juan Pablo Di Pace. A classic love triangle, set in the setting of a deserted island, the movie disappoints on both story and performance levels.
Plot: A Predictable Triangle
The film narrates the story of a rich marriage, Jack Billy Zane and Jennifer Kelly Brook, who are cruising along on a yacht when disaster befalls, leaving them stranded on a tropical island together with a crewman named Manuel Juan Pablo Di Pace. As they fight for their survival, a love triangle evolves, and both men want Jennifer. Events spiral into jealousy, manipulation, and betrayal.
While the premise is as basic as it gets, and that could have made for an intense survival thriller, this movie introduces a superfluous supernatural element-man being supposedly cursed by an ex-girlfriend. The latter plot point adds little to the movie while taking away from what really should have been its meat and potatoes: the main conflict of surviving on a deserted island. And speaking of which, that was poorly executed.
Performances: A Mixed Bag
Billy Zane, the villain from Titanic, here too has played a controlling, jealous husband. However, in the role of Jack, he feels more laid back than the character demands. While his character does a few pretty mean things, his being naturally so charming softens the blow so you never quite feel as if you can hate him.
Kelly Brook, with whom the film centers, was clearly cast for her physical appeal rather than her acting abilities. While she and Zane show early chemistry, she struggles with a consistently placed accent and a flat delivery. Juan Pablo Di Pace, who plays the third member in this little love triangle, does little to flesh much depth into his character, rendering him a plot device rather than a compelling force in the flick.
Story Presentation: Not Engaging and Lacking in Sting
Its whole drama is pivoted on the relation between the three, but it fails to cash in on the tension factor at the right moments. Instead of human nature and strong survival instincts, this movie relies on the same old tropes of romance with weak dialogue. The pacing suffers too in areas: from the predictable confrontations to lame seducing scenes.
It’s completely superfluous, adding to the already really shaky plot. Beautiful though the island setting is, it cannot save this film from its underdeveloped script and spotty performances.
Final Verdict: A Missed Opportunity
*Three* had all the makings of a truly engaging romantic thriller but ultimately disappoints. For a love triangle-centered film, it lacked substantial emotional depth, and the supernatural twist was misplaced. Fans of Billy Zane and Kelly Brook will probably enjoy them in their lead performances, but as for concept delivery, the movie isn’t that great. Unfortunately, for a survival-passion film, *Three* is pretty lifeless.
Rating: 3/10
