Bhanupriya was born on 15 January 1967 into a Telugu-speaking family with the birth name Mangabhanu. She was born in a village called Rangampeta, near Rajahmundry in Andhra Pradesh. Her parents were Pandu Babu and Ragamali. Later, when she was still young, her family shifted their residence to Chennai, Tamil Nadu. She has a younger sister namely, Shantipriya, and a brother namely Gopikrishana.
She has acted in almost 155 feature films in the total span of her acting career. There were two Tamil Nadu State Film Awards, two Filmfare Awards South, two Cinema Express Awards, and three state Nandi Awards for two such stylistic and versatile character roles.
She is one of the prominent mainstream actresses from the beginning of 1983 till 1995, almost a decade. In 1983, she acted in her maiden Tamil film, Mella Pesungal. Then, she went on to star in the blockbuster Sitaara in Telugu, which earned her the National Film Award for Best Feature Film of the Year in Telugu. She had roles in the Hindi movie Dosti Dushmani in 1986 and Swarnakamalam in 1988, which was screened concurrently at the Ann Arbor Film Festival and the 1988 International Film Festival of India. Bhanupriya won, for this film, her first Best Actress Indian Express Award, the Nandi Award, as well as the Filmfare Award for Best Actress – Telugu.
