The sci-fi spectacle Kalki 2898 AD and Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s period drama series Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar have topped IMDb’s list of the most popular Indian films and web series of 2024. The rankings, based on page views from the site’s monthly visitors, highlight the growing appeal of India’s multilingual content, as reported by Variety.

There are seven Hindi titles in the world’s fantastic films list along with several popular franchises like Stree 2, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3, and Singham Again. The upcoming event in Telugu, Kalki 2898 AD, has also made it to the list of the best 10, along with Maharaja and Manjummel Boys in Tamil and Malayalam films, respectively.

Director Nag Ashwin, reflecting on the global reception of Kalki 2898 AD, told Variety, “We poured our souls into the film, and it’s humbling to see it resonate across generations and geographies.”

On the streaming front, Netflix and Prime Video led the way, each with three series featured. Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar was currently the most overrated webseries in the collection, while also featuring Maamla Legal Hai and The Great Indian Kapil Show, both of which stood as the sole foreign non-fiction production name on the list. It managed to achieve show-stealer status alongside newer content and ongoing franchises such as Mirzapur, Panchayat, and Citadel: Honey Bunny.

Actress Deepika Padukone stood out as a leading star in three top-ranking films: Fighter, Kalki 2898 AD, and Singham Again.

India’s official submission to the 97th Academy Awards in the International Feature Film category, Laapataa Ladies, secured the 10th spot among films.

As for the selection criteria, only films released between January 1 and November 25, 2024, with a minimum IMDb user rating of 5, were eligible for consideration, which explains the absence of certain other popular titles.
