There is no better appointment in cricket than that of a national captain. It’s the most coveted position, yet the hardest position for the cricketer to be distinct when duty calls upon them to be different.

A good captain can thus be described in many ways from some being examples, others brilliant tacticians and inspirational through leadership. Internal expectations notwithstanding, most of them have tremendous pressures built into their lives from political, cultural, and national expectations. These factors alone make the search for the best cricket captains a difficult exercise.

It does not mean that the best team is held by the best captain. An average captain is good if the team is great, while a great captain will remain unexpressed by a weaker team.

Attributes of a Great Cricket Captain

While win percentages are a useful marker of success, they never tell the entire story. For instance, while Ricky Ponting’s win percentage is an extraordinary 62.33%, that sits only behind Steve Waugh’s record of 71.92%. Ponting skippered one of the great Test teams in history. That was a very straightforward job at times.

Good captains have excelled in areas like tactical awareness, leadership qualities, and management of personalities. Stephen Fleming’s strategies turned New Zealand into a competitive force while Brian Lara’s performances carried a struggling West Indies team during a hard time.
