Nikhil Kamath was born in Hassan, Karnataka on September 5, 1986 as the co-founder of Zerodha, one of India’s leading fintech companies. Nithin Kamath, his elder brother, has a close showing with him. His father, U.R. Kamath, worked as an executive at Canara Bank, whereas his mother, Revathi Kamath, nurtured the household by taking care of home and raising his sons’ interest in music and educational pursuits. To begin with, he was not very fond of schooling, but through his father’s occupation, he knew something about banking, which was followed by him looking forward to a future in finance.

The company name combines “Zero” and “Rodha,” the Sanskrit word for barrier, symbolizing the removal of trading obstacles. A self-funded venture, Zerodha was bootstrapped with personal savings and has grown to become one of India’s leading unicorns, valued at over $1 billion.

Nikhil, alongside Nithin, identified the need for a transparent, low-cost trading platform, especially catering to middle-class traders. Nikhil’s charity undertakings have also been commendable in pledging half of his wealth to be used in climate change initiatives, education, and health.
