Know About Ambazari Garden’s Rs. 22 cr Laser Show Project

The historic landmark of the city, Ambazari Garden, has recently hit a significant controversy following the inauguration of the ₹22 crore multimedia and laser show project. The event, which began as an enhancement to the culture and recreational resources of the city, has already drawn criticism, however, regarding the extended public closure of the garden.

History of Ambazari Garden:

Ambazari Garden, established in 1958, has remained one of the prized recreational centers for the residents of Nagpur. It presents the beauty of greenery with serene views of Ambazari Lake. Management of the garden was transferred from the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) to the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) in 2017. The operation of the garden was handed over to Garuda Amusement Nagpur Pvt. Ltd., in November 2019.

The ₹22 Crore Laser Show Project:

The Nagpur Metropolitan Region Development Authority had already begun a ₹22 crore laser and multimedia show project on a 2.25-acre plot near the Ambazari Lake to boost tourism in the region and make the place a modern entertainment destination. The high-tech attraction was meant to provide experiential activities, such as a film about the life of Swami Vivekananda against the scenic view of the lake.

Public Access Restrictions and Controversy:

Even after the successful completion of this project, for more than five years, citizens have been facing closure of Ambazari Garden. Now, the blame is on the private operator, Garuda Amusement, which was said to be restricting access due to some unidentified reasons without showing any proper clarification. This step has caused serious resentment among the public as they have been deprived both of the normal garden space as well as this newly developed laser show.

Demolition of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Memorial Cultural Centre:

Adding fuel to the controversy, Garuda Amusement destroyed the Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Memorial Cultural Centre within the garden premises, which angered the devotees and the community at large. Although the government-sanctioned ₹10 crore for the memorial’s reconstruction later, the demolition has left an indelible mark on public sentiment.

Community Demands for Transparency and Openness:

Due to the ongoing closure and recent occurrences, the people have been under constant pressure to the concerned authorities for clear transparency and the opening of the Ambazari Garden. Citizens question the continued stay of Garuda Amusement over the garden asking for its opening immediately. People who visit frequently, especially elders, children, and families who have been regular visitors to the garden, are asking for accessible open spaces in the city.

Status and Future Aspects:

As of December 2024, the ₹22 crore laser show project remains closed to the public due to the current closure of Ambazari Garden. The people are apprehensive that the investment will go to waste if the place is not opened to the public soon. Local authorities and the stakeholders are under tremendous pressure to solve the problems in the garden’s management and ensure that the space makes use of its ultimate purpose as a hub of recreation and culture for the people of Nagpur.

Conclusion:

The laser show project at Ambazari Garden was a large project intended to uplift the cultural ambiance of Nagpur, but the benefits were lost because it was not accessible to the public. This is one of the reasons why transparency in management and involvement of the community in the planning stage of public space development is essential.
