India’s young batter Shubman Gill has done everything in his power to solidify his spot in the national team across all formats. Since scoring his maiden international century during the ODI series against Zimbabwe last year, Gill has gone on to reach the three-figure mark six more times at the highest level.

Gill encountered an extraordinary patch earlier this year, smashing four centuries in white cricket in just 18 days. Such a brilliant form on his part cements his spot to make his case for a spot in India’s playing XI for the forthcoming first test against Australia at Nagpur, particularly with Shreyas Iyer obviously not present due to injury.

In addition to scoring centuries in his last two matches across the limited-overs formats, the 23-year-old also notched up a ton in his penultimate Test match nearly two months ago. His consistent performances against various oppositions and in different formats make him a strong contender, even if it means batting in the middle order during the match at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium.

Post his maiden international century, Gill has accumulated 1,244 runs in 23 innings at an average of 62.20. It included six hundreds and two fifties. Some very outstanding numbers that underline how he is exponentially carving a niche for himself on the international stage.

Gill has already established his credibility for India; continuing in the same rich vein of form in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023 would only rid him of any more reputation. If he manages to hit another fine hundred or another forget-me-not innings – say, precisely the one that left an indelible mark in Gabba – his reputation as India’s fastest rising is going to be reinforced.
