The Chennai Super Kings (CSK), one of the most successful franchises in the Indian Premier League (IPL), faced a two-year ban from the tournament in 2015 due to their involvement in the infamous IPL betting and spot-fixing scandal. The ban lasted for the 2016 and 2017 seasons, significantly impacting the team and its loyal fanbase.
The Controversy: 2013 IPL Betting Scandal
The scandal came to light during the 2013 IPL season, with charges of betting and match-fixing being alleged, which triggered the launch of a massive inquiry. The controversy mostly centered around Gurunath Meiyappan, the BCCI All India Senior Selection Committee, and acting president of the BCCI, N. Srinivasan’s son-in-law, president of the Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI).

Meiyappan was accused of involvement in unlawful wagering activity in accordance with the anti-corruption rules of IPL. His close association with bookmakers raised the question of whether or not insider information was being used in an arbitrage-type betting way.
The Investigation and Supreme Court’s Verdict
Following the allegations, a committee has been formed headed by the Supreme Court of India. The probe revealed that Mr. Meiyappan did, in fact, gamble, although no proof was brought forward of any allegations of match-fixing.
The Justice R.M. Lodha Committee, appointed by the Supreme Court, concluded that CSK and Rajasthan Royals (RR) were responsible for failing to control corrupt practices within their management. Consequently, in July 2015, the committee temporarily banned the two teams from taking part in the IPL for the next two years.
Impact of the Ban on CSK
The suspension was a defeat for CSK, a franchise that rose to become the king of the IPL during the year it was formed in 2008. With MS Dhoni at the helm, the CSK had already won two IPLs (2010, 2011) and has been one of the standout teams consistently in the IPL. In addition to disappointing fans, the suspension also interrupted team teamwork as well as the company’s business model.

CSK’s Grand Comeback in 2018
CSK roared back after serving the 2-year penalty in the IPL 2018 season. Back in the captaincy role, the team defused the skepticism by winning the IPL trophy in their return to play i.e., they proved themselves to be a proportionate and conquering team in the IPL.
Conclusion
CSK’s two-year suspension remains one of the darkest chapters in the history of IPL. On the other hand, their power in their recovery in 2018 demonstrated the true character of the franchise and they became one of the most popular teams of cricket in history.
