Early Life and Journey to Cricket

Kuldeep Yadav initially aspired to be a left-arm fast bowler, drawing inspiration from legendary pacers like Wasim Akram and Zaheer Khan. However, due to his build and lack of pace, his coach advised him to switch to left-arm spin. This decision turned out to be life-changing, as he quickly developed a deep understanding of spin bowling.

He honed his skills by closely studying Shane Warne’s techniques, watching numerous videos to understand the nuances of grip, delivery length, and use of the crease.

“I keep watching videos of Warne. His grip, length of deliveries, and use of the crease are unbeatable. I try to learn from the footage,” Kuldeep once shared in an interview.

Despite early setbacks—such as failing to make the Under-15 team—Kuldeep remained determined. At one point, he was so disheartened that he contemplated quitting cricket, but his father’s unwavering support helped him stay on course.

Breakthrough in Under-19 Cricket

Kuldeep’s big break came during the 2014 Under-19 World Cup, where he emerged as the highest wicket-taker of the tournament. His performances left batsmen clueless, and he even became the first bowler to take a hat-trick in the tournament’s history.

His success in age-group cricket led to more opportunities, and he continued impressing in the 2016 Duleep Trophy, where he took 17 wickets in just three matches.

International Debut and Rise

Kuldeep’s consistent domestic performances earned him a call-up to the Indian national team for the 2017 Test series against Australia. Making his debut in the fourth Test, he immediately made an impact by claiming four wickets, leaving the Aussie batters in disarray.

Later that year, he made his ODI debut against the West Indies, finishing as the joint-highest wicket-taker in the series. Alongside Yuzvendra Chahal, he formed a formidable spin duo known as “KulCha”, replacing the veteran pair of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja in limited-overs cricket.

However, during the 2019 World Cup, Kuldeep struggled on English pitches, and batsmen began to read his variations more effectively. As a result, his place in the playing XI became uncertain, with the team management opting to rotate between Chahal and Kuldeep instead of playing both together.

Indian Premier League (IPL) Journey

Kuldeep was first picked by Mumbai Indians in 2012, but he did not play a single match in his first two seasons. In 2014, he joined Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), but opportunities remained limited due to the presence of experienced spinners like Brad Hogg.

His breakthrough IPL season came in 2017, where he played 12 matches, picking up 12 wickets at an average of 28.33. His best season was in 2018, where he took 17 wickets in 16 games. However, in 2019, he had a disappointing run, managing only 4 wickets in 9 matches.

With the T20 World Cup on the horizon, Kuldeep aims to regain his form in upcoming IPL seasons and cement his place in the national squad.
