Chiranjeevi: The Icon of Indian Cinema and Public Life
Popularly known as Chiru, Konidela Siva Sankara Vara Prasad has made his mark in Indian politics as well as in Telugu cinema. Born in Mogalthur, Andhra Pradesh on August 22, 1955, Chiranjeevi’s influence extends across generations, both on-screen and off.
Early Life and Educational Aspects
Chiranjeevi was born as the son of Konidela Venkata Rao and Anjana Devi. After schooling, he studied at C.S.R. Sharma College in Ongole, graduating with a Bachelor of Commerce from Sri Y.N. College, Narsapur. With an emotional penchant for acting, he got himself enrolled in the Madras Film Institute and trained to lay his foundations for the glorious film career.
Entry into the Film Industry and Entry to Fame
He made his entry into the film world with PU (1978) in which he had first appeared and followed it with another film called Pranam Khareedu. His presence on the screen especially in dance and action sequences turned a household name and made him receive the title of “Mega Star.” As decades passed, the number of films featuring him crossed the figure of 150, most of them in Telugu, but a few were popular amongst the oldest ones, like Gharana Mogudu, Indra, Tagore, and Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy. More than a score of awards have been achieved through his works including two of India’s civil awards, the Padma Bhushan in 2006 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2024.
Political Career
Chiranjeevi entered politics by founding the Praja Rajyam Party in Andhra Pradesh state in 2008. The party performed creditably in the state assembly elections in 2009, winning 18 seats, before merging into the Indian National Congress in 2011. The following year, he was made Union Minister of State for Tourism, a position he held until 2014.
Philanthropic Initiatives
Showing his commitment to social causes, Chiranjeevi founded the Chiranjeevi Charitable Trust (CCT) on October 2, 1998. The trust maintains a blood bank and an eye bank, having collected more than 930,000 units of blood, so mostly offered free of cost to those in need. It has also developed an eye bank with a special focus on restoration of vision through corneal transplants.
Family and Personal Life
Chiranjeevi married Surekha, who is the daughter of the great actor Allu Ramalingaiah. The couple has three children, one of whom is Ram Charan, a leading actor in Telugu cinema. The family has roots planted deep into the entertainment and the political scene, including his brother Nagendra Babu and Pawan Kalyan, who are equally famous personalities.

From the smallest beginning in rural Andhra Pradesh to the greatest fame achieved in cinema and then ascending to a post in the Indian government, Chiranjeevi’s life stands for perseverance, passion, and a great sense of public service. His contributions have become a permanent part of the life of India and continue to inspire millions.
