Introduction
Phulwa’ had a run as a very popular Hindi TV drama on Colors TV from January 2011 to March 2012. Set in rural India, the show is based on true stories of female dacoits which including the famous Phoolan Devi. Phulwa had that connect with the audience because of its thrilling plot, great acting and also the social issues it brought up. Produced by Siddharth Tewary’s Swastik Pictures, the show left a large impact on the Indian TV world.
Plot Overview
Phulwa, a young village girl who is the star of this story which sees her put through injustice and tragedy that in turn forms her into a strong and determined woman that is out for justice. Also told is the tale of her growth from innocence to rebellion which in the process brings out issues of feudalism, gender based discrimination and exploitation.
Lead Cast
Jannat Zubair Rahmani as Young Phulwa.
Child star Jannat Zubair played the young Phulwa and had audiences at the palm of her hand with her innocent charm and talent, which she brought to the role. She did the tough job of building the emotional base for the character, in which Phulwa’s pain and strength as a child came through.
Sargun Mehta as Adult Phulwa
Sargun played the role of grown up Phulwa as the story grew in scope. In what was to becoming a signature performance of her career which also played to her strength in terms of emotional acting and stage presence, she brought to life Phulwa as a bold and fearless woman that is out to put an end to injustice and oppression. Also in this go around Sargun added a layer of maturity to the character.
Ajay as ACP Abhay Singh.
Ajay Choudhary plays Abhay Singh in what is the lead male role. At first his character is against Phulwa but as we go in to his thought process we see what issues he is dealing with. This character had elements of moral struggle and romance which in turn made the story more dynamic.
Supporting Cast
Angad Hasija as Shankar
Angad played the role of Shankar, who at the start is that of an anti-hero, but also goes through great development. He delivered on the issue of internal struggle and transformation, which the audience very much responded to.
Asha Sharma as Badi Thakurain
Veteran actor Asha Sharma played the role of Badi Thakurain which was that of a strong yet traditional character in the village. In that role she brought in great authenticity to the rural setting which she also used to put forward the generational gap.
Shikha Singh as Mahua
Shikha Singh played Mahua, a very complex character which at times is caught between family loyalty and moral issues. She brought depth to the story.
Pratima Kazmi as Amro Devi
Pratima played Amro Devi, a powerful antiheroine and matriarch. In what is terms of her dark negative roles she added a very ruthless element to the story which made her one of the most memorable baddies in the show.

Siddharth Kumar Tewary who founded Swastik Productions brought to life what became Phulwa. He aimed to present social issues in an entertaining way which in turn played a key role in the success of the show.
Director – Arvind Babbal
Arvind Babbal a professional TV director did very well he brought a very sharp eye to detail. He did an excellent job in capturing the rural setting and emotional nuances, which made Phulwa a very real and raw experience.
Writers Usha Dixit and Sanjay Masoomm.
Usha Dixit and Sanjay Masoom were the writers of the show’s script and teleplay. What they did was add depth to the characters and improve the show’s realism in emotional and confrontational scenes.
Impact and Legacy
Phulwa saw it into the spotlight to the issues they brought out through a very engaging fiction. They broke from the mold of family drama with their raw theme and rural setting. The actors which in particular Jannat Zubair and Sargun Mehta, did very well. The show also which ran into launching or putting forward many careers, is still to this day looked at as a fine example of relevant television content.
Conclusion
The Phulwa team did a great job at telling a very powerful story, which at the same time was entertaining and brought to the fore issues of justice and social reform. In terms of character development, emotion, and impact, Phulwa excelled, which is the reason it is still very much a memorable chapter in the history of Indian TV.
