A Hindi drama film, I Want to Talk, first aired on Amazon Prime Video on November 22, 2024. Directed by Shoojit Sircar and scripted by Ritesh Shah, the film features Abhishek Bachchan in a very passionate portrayal of Arjun Sen, an affluent advertising executive who lives in the US. Arjun’s supposedly perfect life is shattered when he learns that he is terminally ill with cancer and has barely 100 days left to live. Faced with this catastrophic news, he embarks on an internal journey and attempts to mend his unusually troubled relationship with his daughter, Reya. In this transformation, his end goal turns out to be a simple but deep desire, to dance at her wedding- simply a promise to hold out for hope, redemption, and reconciliation.

The film gets emotional support from a good cast that includes Ahilya Bamroo, Johnny Lever, and Kristin Goodard. It has been greatly appreciated by many critics for his nuanced- and genuine- acting which many reviewers judged as one of the best of his career. Director Sowjith Sircar adds his own signature subtlety and depth to the story with unflinching, yet arresting, cinematography by Avik Mukhopadhyay. The soundtrack is composed by George Joseph and Koyna with songs from Taba Chake to add depth to the reflective mood without overwhelming the story itself.
I Want to Talk received warm reviews from critics because of its honest presentations of family bonds and emotional drama when one is near death. The Guardian may have found honesty in the film but also feels it is lacking in accompanying character development at the earliest scenes. Meanwhile, Indian media such as India Today and Hindustan Times drew the brilliance of Bachchan’s understated performance and the penetrating direction of Sircar.
In essence, I Want to Talk is a very intense character-driven film that grapples with the themes of life, regret, and reconciliation. It is a quiet, yet powerful message about what really matters when the sands of time begin to run down.
