Ajith Kumar’s highly awaited movie Vidaamuyarchi, directed by Magizh Thirumeni, strikes an incredible balance between poignancy and characters in focus. The film is essentially about what it all means, a meditation on love, forgiveness, and the sacrifices needed for a successful marriage, which is the title of the movie, “Determination.”
The film is about Arjun (Ajith Kumar), a successful architect who seemingly has his work in command but is having some difficulties with his private life. His wife, Meera (Trisha Krishnan), is an independent writer who is beginning to emotionally disconnect from Arjun. As tensions and silence become more prevalent, a couple who began the romance connected begins to come apart.

Vidaamuyarchi focuses on the subtleties of being in a couple trying to hold on to the love they have shared, without using the melodrama or laying blame. It explores ideas of ego, sacrifice, emotional labor, and the ordinary struggles of cohabiting together. Ajith gives a surprisingly restrained performance, abandoning the grand persona he has had previously to embody vulnerability and regret. Trisha is regal as always, deeply engaging her character’s multi-dimensionality so that Meera feels relatable and complex.

The unique and confident vision for this film is by Magizh Thirumeni, for letting characters live rather than simply appearing on screen. The screenplay has a few dull moments, but those really do serve the emotional tone of the story. The music score is by Ghibran, who, it seemed, created a really nice feel for the film, and the visuals by Nirav Shah highlighted the raw beauty of city isolations and the splendor of renewal in a non-city world.

Vidaamuyarchi is not your average Ajith action film, but it is a noble effort to refashion star-centric filmmaking, and it is possible to convey that love stories, focus on marriage or not, can be as captivating as many thrillers, as it really depends on the maturity with which they are revealed.

The Verdict: Vidaamuyarchi is both an invigorating and loving trip into contemporary life as a husband and wife. It is this type of film that whispers but rings loud enough to people who glean from it that, as with life, love has no stopping point and must be continually cultivated.
