Karnataka, which is a storehouse of culture in South India, puts forth its heritage via many art forms, architecture, festivals and traditional attire. In terms of fashion, the region’s climate, culture and very old customs are very much reflected in the clothing styles of Karnataka. While each district may have some variation, there are certain traditional garments that very much represent the Kannada identity.

Traditional Dress of Men in Karnataka

Karnataka men’s traditional wear, what you will see is commonly the panche or dhoti, which they pair with a jubba (a long shirt) and a piece of cloth they wear over the shoulders, the angavastram.

In the rural areas, men are to be seen in a shirt and lungi at home, at other times the formal dhoti is put on for religious functions, cultural events and festivals. On special occasions, which are considered lucky, men may wear a silk dhoti which has a gold border (called “pattada panche” along with a silk shirt or kurta, which they do so for weddings and visiting the temple.

Traditional Dress of Women in Karnataka

Women in Karnataka have been wearing sarees, which they drape in a unique regional style. To that list we may add the Ilkal, which is very popular in that area. These are known for their bright borders and distinct pallu, which is a result of the “tope teni” technique. Ilkal sarees are mostly made of cotton or a mix of cotton and silk, which in turn makes them a great choice for daily wear.

Another classic choice is the Mysore silk saree, which is known for its rich texture, bright colours and elegant zari work. Women wear these with short-sleeved blouses and also pair them up with gold jewellery, glass bangles and flowers (especially jasmine) in their hair.

In some communities where certain folk performances or rituals take place, women put on Langa Davani, also known as half saree, which consists of a long skirt, a blouse and a dupatta-like drape. Also, this is a traditional choice of dress for young girls, which they wear before they begin to wear sarees.

Contemporary Influence and Cultural Significance

In the cities, and especially among youth, we see the adoption of Western fashion, but at the same time, in festivals, religious events, and weddings, traditional wear is still very much in vogue. These clothes are a symbol of Karnataka’s regional identity, which also showcases our textile arts like handloom work, natural dyeing, and detailed embroidery.

Karnataka’s traditional wear is a perfect mix of comfort, culture and elegance, which also represents their attachment to heritage and identity.
