Family and Early Life
His parents are Dr. Rajinikanth Dommaraju, an ENT specialist, and Dr. Padma Kumari, a microbiologist. Though they themselves were not from a chess family, both of them made enormous personal sacrifices to develop Gukesh’s ability at a very early age; his father even availed himself of leave from work, and his mother managed the family finances.

How Chess has Evolved and Developed over Time
He started playing chess at seven years old, and, in 2013, learned only an hour a day, at first. He won the Under-9 tournament of the Asian School Chess Championship in 2015, and was the 2nd youngest Grandmaster in the world at age 12 years, 7 months, and 17 days, on January 15, 2019.

Rating & Achievements
In 2022, Gukesh became the 3rd youngest player in history to play with a rating of over 2700 Elo, and the youngest player in history to have a rating of over 2750 in 2023.

From Grand Masters to World Champion
On April 16, 2024, in Toronto, Gukesh became the youngest Candidates Tournament winner and championed the youngest world title challenger at seventeen years and ten months old. He was only 18 years 195 days old when he became the youngest undisputed world champion by winning against Ding Liren in a 14-game classical match in Singapore.

Mentoring and Playing Style
His development has been guided by Indian five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand and mental conditioning by coach Paddy Upton, who is famous for working with Indian cricket and hockey sides.

Legacy & Recent Highlights
Gukesh took India to team victory and a board one individual gold at the 2022 Chess Olympiad. He delivered India’s first Olympic team gold in 2024 and a second individual gold board medal. He stunned the chess community in 2025 when he defeated Magnus Carlsen at Norway Chess, which created admiration and outrage due to his conduct in the post-match controversy.

Gukesh Dommaraju’s meteoric ascension is a testament to his immense talent, tireless family support, excellent coaching, and the constantly expanding Indian chess infrastructure. Already a world phenomenon and inspiration to young hopefuls at just the age of 19.
