Early Life and Education

Born 1979 on June 20th, Leigh Spann is from Hazlehurst, Georgia. She grew up in a tight-knit community, which saw the beginning of her love for science and public speaking. Academically excellent, she went on to graduate as valedictorian of her high school class. Taking her passion to the next level, she attended the University of Georgia, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Geography with honours. She also completed a certificate in atmospheric sciences, which in turn set the stage for her successful career in broadcast meteorology.

Career in Broadcasting and Meteorology

Leigh began her professional life as an intern at a local TV station, which was the start of her move into full-time broadcasting. In the early days of her career, she went to Macon, Georgia, and Charleston, South Carolina, which is where she got her experience in weather forecasting for on-air reports. In 2007, she joined a major news station in Tampa, Florida, where she served as the morning meteorologist for almost 17 years. Known for her clear communication and calm personality during severe weather events, she became a trusted figure in many homes.

Her contributions went beyond the norm, which in turn were recognised. Over time, she won multiple awards as well as a regional Emmy award, which was for work on her pre-hurricane coverage. Also known for her professionalism and dedicated delivery, she became the go-to woman when issues with the weather were brought up in the area.

Retirement and New Chapter

In the late 2024 season, Leigh announced her exit from on-air meteorology. That year in November saw her last weather report, which put a close to a very large chapter in her career. She moved to northern Ohio to be with her husband and took up a new role as a broadcast talent agent. In this capacity, she is now mentoring and representing young meteorologists and journalists, which she does so from the perspective of her vast industry experience.

Personal Life and Family

As of 2025 Leigh Spann is at the age of 46 years old. She is married to a TV station manager whom she met while working in Tampa. Although she keeps much of her personal life to herself, it is known that she is very close to her two pet dogs, Pickles and Emily. Also against public speculation, she is not related to famous meteorologist James Spann.

Leigh has a medium build, very active in fact, she’s a serious runner, has done for some years now, which includes many marathons and semi-marathons.
