Ashlee Baracy: A Journey Through Weather, Pageants, and Purpose
Ashlee Baracy was born in Westland, Michigan, on the 22nd of April, 1985. From the moment she entered this world, she has been gifted with an incredible presence of mind and charisma, with both these qualities serving her well in pageantry and later on in broadcast journalism. A probable testament also to her grace of style and leadership was her schooling at John Glenn High School, where she cheerled and also served in student government.
Ashlee thereafter went on to study at the University of Michigan, taking up the unique combination of English and Sociology. Her academic pursuits went further, though, as she did get a Broadcast Meteorology certificate at Mississippi State University and a master’s degree from Eastern Michigan University, enabling her to pursue a career behind the lens.
Ashlee’s early public recognition came when she entered the world of beauty pageants. In 2008, she earned the title of Miss Michigan and soon after represented her state in the Miss America 2009 pageant. She achieved a Top 10 finish and received an award for her commitment to community service, marking her as more than just a pageant contestant.
Her career in broadcast journalism began at Detroit television station WDIV-TV, where she was essentially always a traffic and general assignment reporter, with the odd stint filling-in for weather. She took another giant leap down her career path and joined WBNS-10TV in Columbus, Ohio, in 2015, going on to be an esteemed member of the weather team until she broke all barriers to become the first female Chief Meteorologist there by 2019! She was recognized for her calm demeanor in severe weather flashes and for accuracy in weather forecasting, winning many awards, such as Emmy Awards and several awards for “Best Weathercast” from the Ohio Associated Press.
In 2023, Ashlee decided it was time to go back to her roots; she rejoined WDIV-TV in Detroit as a weekday morning and noon meteorologist. Her return was well received by viewers who had appreciated her work in earlier days.
Ashlee is married to Jeff Kunkel, a Michigan native and former professional baseball outfielder. The couple met at a Detroit Tigers game, got engaged at Belle Isle, and married at Detroit’s Gem Theatre in 2017. They now have two children: Carter (born August 2019) and Caylee (born November 2021).
