In the digital entertainment space in 2026 some web series which did see great success and still do in the Indian OTT space. In that list is MX Player’s Mastram which is a phenomenon. First released a while back the series told the story of a fictional 1980s erotic writer’s journey which had elements of humor, nostalgia and boldness in its telling.

Up to present day the show is known for its cast which put together a very diverse group of actresses that brought to life complex often daring characters. These women went beyond the scope of what a character is; they were the face of a genre shift which we saw Indian storytelling take on themes of desire and fantasy in a very nuanced way. In the top of fans’ mind is Kenisha Awasthi when they think of the series. She played the role of Miss Rita, a biology teacher which was that of theProtagonist’s early inspiration. Her character was key in arousing the writer’s imagination. Awasthi’s performance balanced between strict authority and hidden sexiness which made “Master Ji Ka Danda” one of the most watched episodes of the franchise.

While many characters appeared as short term inspirations, Madhu which Tara Alisha Berry played, was the emotional through line for the series. As the lead female and Rajaram’s romantic interest, Berry gave a performance that grew from innocent to complex. Her character arc presented the struggle between tradition and the search for personal pleasure within the framework of a dedicated relationship.

In the Bhojpuri film industry a star which also is a superstar Rani Chatterjee came in with her large fan base and screen presence to play the role of Rani. Aabha Paul is the face of bold digital content, also known for her role as Mallu Aunty in the series which is a legend. In the episode “Mallu Aunty Ka Malmal” Paul played a character which was totally unsparing and full of energy. Her large screen presence and no hold back approach to the role secured her status as a digital icon which she still holds in 2026.

In the episode “Baniya Ka Lollipop” Amrita Das Gupta took on the role of Chhoti Bahu (youngest daughter in law). Her performance was a hit for the way in which it was subtle. She played out a story of a woman in a traditional setting which is that of loneliness and seek[ing] connection. Gupta did well to put across the vulnerability and quiet desperation of a housewife which in turn added a social commentary to the erotic elements.

Garima Jain broke into a meta role as Indurekha which is that of an actress within the show’s world. Her character grew to represent the — sometimes dark side of the entertainment industry in particular the “casting couch” issue. Jain’s performance was dynamic and had great impact in to the plot which in turn gave a satirical take at the very industry which the show is a part of.

  1. Ashmita Jaggi as Inspector G.

Breaking away from the traditional damsels and housewives roles, Ashmita Jaggi took on that of Inspector Gayatri. In the “Vaibhav Ki Didi” episode which she did Jaggi introduced as a powerful and authoritative woman in a male dominated world thus she turned the tables around as far as who is in control in the story goes. Her performance which was at once serious and seductive became a fan favorite.

Nehal as Nanda which was a character that brought in many unexpected turns to the series. Nanda put the main character’s and by extension the audience’s world views to the test which in turn made them re think their standpoints on relationships. Also it was Nehal’s performance which transformed between that of innocence and calculated intent which made her stand out as the star performer of the series.

  1. Shikha Sinha in the role of Sonu Dhoban.

Shikha Sinha portrayed Sonu Dhoban, the washerwoman which went on to become the talk of the village. Her story revolved around how her beauty took the whole town by storm which in turn resulted in a friendship with the village Sarpanch. Sinha’s character was the centerpiece of Mastram’s small town erotica which the film aimed to present, she played the fantasy of the “girl next door” to perfection.

  1. Kamalika Chanda in the role of The Secretary.

Rounding out our list is Kamalika Chanda which featured in the series as the Secretary. Known for her bold acting style which broke the mold, Chanda’s characters were among the most daring in the run of the show. She played a modern professional which didn’t pull any punches in terms of what she said or did which in turn added to the show’s tag as a pioneer in pushing boundaries on OTT.

In 2026 as we look back Mastram’s success was not for its controversial subject matter alone but for the conviction in which those actresses put it out. They went in to social taboos and turned what could have been flat characters into memorable ones.
