The Maratha Empire’s history is filled with stories of valour, strategy, and resilience. In the elite company of great Maratha leaders, we see that Rani Tarabai is an outstanding element, being the preeminent figure who brought the kingdom through its most trying times. As the regent who took over at a time of no leader, she is known for keeping the Maratha fire burning against the large-scale Mughal Empire. Her life is a report of her military skill, political insight, and unbroken will.

Early Life and Noble Lineage

Born in 1675, Tarabai was from a distinguished military family. She was the daughter of the great Maratha commander in chief, Hambirao Mohite and the niece of Soyrabai which was the wife of Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. This gave her a place at the center of Maratha power politics from a young age. She married Chatrapati Rajaram Maharaj the younger son of Shivaji. While she was raised to be a royal consort her also was trained in the art of war and administration which would play key role in her later life. This base in those fields of military and administrative training prepared her for the great responsibilities which were to come her way.

Following the passing of Chatrapati Rajaram in 1700, the Maratha Empire was at a crossroads. Emperor Aurangzeb was out to put an end to Maratha resistance once and for all. At that low point, Tarabai came through. Instead of falling into grief or going into seclusion, she took up the reins of the empire as a regent for her young son Shivaji II.

Tarabai was a force behind the scenes; she was a dynamic strategist who put her strategy into play in military campaigns. In her inspiring leadership, which was a great asset, Maratha commanders like Dhanaji Jadhav and Khanderao Dabhade went on the offensive. They did not just play defence; they went on to raid Mughal territories as far as Malwa and Gujarat. We see key forts like Panhala, Satara and Sinhagad back in Maratha hands, which they had won back from Mughal control. What also frustrated Aurangzeb was her ability to pull these plans together, which in turn left him with large resources, but still, he could not break the Maratha resistance. In the end, it was Aurangzeb who died in 1707, leaving in his wake a divided empire and a Maratha power that came out stronger.

Internal Conflict: The issue of Shahu.

The death of Aurangzeb was a turning point, but it also marked the beginning of a period of civil war. The Mughals let Prince Shahu out of prison and into the open in the hope of setting the Marathas against each other. It played out as they thought it would. Tarabai did not support Shahu’s right to the throne; she saw him as a fake and a Mughal pawn. She put forth her son as the true heir, which in turn caused a succession fight.

However, at a certain point, the trend changed against her as many important Maratha chieftains left her side to go over to Shahu’s, which they saw as the true line. Also, at this time of defeat in the military field and political isolation, Tarabai was made to give in. In 1713, she went to Kolhapur, set up a separate base of power, which in effect put the Maratha ruling house into two parts: the Satara and Kolhapur branches.

Later Politics and Legacy

In her old age, Tarabai was still a force in Maratha politics. After the death of Shahu in 1749, she stepped forward to take control, which she did by supporting Ramraja as the heir. Her political games brought her into direct conflict with the powerful Peshwa, Balaji Bajirao. She went as far as to jail Ramraja when he proved hard to control. Although she eventually came to an agreement with the Peshwa, which saw her acknowledge their authority in exchange for autonomy in her principality, she never lost her fire.

Rani Tarabai died in 1761, leaving behind a legacy of resistance and fortitude. She saved the Maratha Empire from annihilation at its lowest point, which proved that leadership is a matter of courage and skill and not gender.
