Assam is a state located in the far north- east of ultramodern India, framed by Bangladesh on its western side. Its population reflects a rich mix of ethnical origins, including Mongoloid, Caucasian and Australoid groups. Linguistically, the region is inversely different, with Austro- Asiatic, Indo- Aryan, and Tibeto- Burman languages shaping its artistic identity.

In ancient times, Assam was known as Kamarupa or Pragjyotisha, a name deeply embedded in Indian tradition. The foremost autocrats of the region were thesemi-mythical Danava lords, mentioned in textbooks similar as the Ramayana, Mahabharata, Kalika Purana, and Yogini Tantra. These early autocrats were believed to be Kirata chiefs, conceivably of Mongoloid origin. The Danava dynasty ended when Ghatakasura was defeated by Narakasura, who innovated the Naraka dynasty around the alternate renaissance BC. Narakasura and latterly lords like Bhagadatta are associated with fabulous events, including participation in the Kurukshetra War.

After centuries of obscurity, Assam entered recorded history with the rise of the Varman dynasty( announcement 350 – 655). Ruling from the Brahmaputra vale, the Varman lords established Kamarupa as a significant political power. King Bhaskaravarman stands out for his alliance with Harshavardhana and his patronage of both Hinduism and Buddhism.

Following the Varmans, the Mlechha dynasty( c. 655 – 900) ruled from Tezpur, succeeded by the Kamarupa Pala lords( c. 900 – 1100), who were Vaishnavites and claimed descent from earlier autocrats. Although their power declined over time, Kamarupa compactly recaptured independence in the 12th century before eventually collapsing in 1228.

The most continuing chapter in Assam’s history began with the appearance of the Ahoms in 1228. Originating from the Shan- Tai region of Southeast Asia, the Ahoms ruled Assam for nearly 600 times. Under leaders like Sukapha and latterly icons similar as Lachit Borphukan, they successfully defied Mughal irruptions and shaped Assam’s political, artistic, and executive foundations until British control was established in the early 19th century.
