The world of fitness often presents an image of absolute invincibility. We look at heavily muscled athletes and assume they are entirely unbreakable, both physically and emotionally. I remember when my cousin first started lifting heavy back in the late 2010s; he used to flood our family WhatsApp group with motivational training clips from local Indian bodybuilders. Among those raw, powerful videos, one face always stood out: Neeraj Pepsu. He had a massive, looming physique but paired it with a remarkably warm, humble smile.
In the early days of 2020, when news of his death broke, it sent shock waves through the community. It was a painful notice that those who bear the greatest burdens are often what we keep within us the most.
The Rise of Neeraj Pepsu

Born into the world as Neeraj Tanwar Pepsu on January 7, 1987, he spent his formative years in Fatehpur Beri, Delhi, which is a community steeped in the culture of traditional wrestling. In that setting, which passed down from generation to generation, of which he was a part, Neeraj, at the age of late teens, developed a passion for weight training. At 5 feet 10 inches in height and a mass of almost 100 kilos of solid muscle, he very soon became a local fitness icon.
Neeraj didn’t have access to luxury commercial gyms at first. He built his athletic physique with basic gear and great determination. By 2010, he had started out as a local gym trainer, which by 2013 had him winning two amateur bodybuilding titles. To support his family and pursue his fitness goals, he also took on very tough shifts as a night club bouncer in Gurugram. By 2016, he had transitioned into a digital fitness influencer, which in 2018 saw him open his own gym in Delhi, where he has mentored over a hundred young fitness enthusiasts.
The Tragic Reality Behind the Smile
In March of 2020, the Indian fitness community came to a standstill. Neeraj was brought to AIIMS Delhi from his home in Fatehpur Beri, and there he was sadly declared dead at the young age of 33. It was also reported that he had taken poison in the form of sulpha tablets, which caused his death.
While he portrayed a picture of health and strict discipline on social media, the reality behind it was very different. Neeraj was dealing with severe depression, which was the result of a perfect storm of personal issues. His father was going through a very tough cancer battle, which at the same time was very hard on the family’s finances. At the same time, Neeraj’s dhaba business in Gurgaon saw large-scale financial loss. To make it worse, the March 2020 lockdowns, which saw clubs and gyms shut down almost immediately, left his income streams dry. Silently, the emotional toll became too much to bear.

A Great Legacy and a Look at Mental Health.
Though short-lived, Neeraj Pepsu’s life brought out a large-scale change in the Indian bodybuilding community’s perspective, which, for a long time, looked at mental health issues as a sign of weakness. Neeraj’s death broke that mould, which in turn made it possible for trainers and influencers all over the country to begin talking openly about depression and anxiety.
Today in Delhi, we see many gyms that pay tribute to him by way of annual “Mental Fitness Week” events. Neeraj taught us that true physical strength is actually that which also includes emotional balance. True fitness isn’t just in the development of an unbreakable exterior; it’s in the strength to speak out when the world’s issues become too much to bear.
