Applying for a U.S. visa can feel like a lot to deal with. There are so many steps, so many instructions, and then you run into something called an “OFC appointment.” OFC means Offsite Facilitation Centre, which sounds pretty formal, but it’s pretty straightforward. This is the place where they’ll take your fingerprints and snap your photo—usually right before or around the time of your visa interview at the U.S. consulate.
So what’s really going on at an OFC appointment? Basically, it’s a scheduled visit to a visa application centre, but don’t expect to see the consular officer yet. This is for the paperwork and biometrics—the stuff they need before you reach the main event. The exact process depends on where you’re applying, what kind of visa you want, and whatever the most recent official instructions say.
It’s smart to stick to the info you get from the official U.S. visa website for your country. Skip the advice from random agents or whatever pops up in online groups. The official site lays out all the steps, fees, and how to book your appointments.
At your OFC appointment, they’ll scan your fingerprints, take your photo, and check your details and paperwork. It’s not an interview—no one’s grilling you about your plans. Usually, it’s just about confirming your info and making sure everything matches up with your documents. Answer their questions honestly, and make sure your details are consistent.
The OFC appointment isn’t the same as your visa interview. The OFC visit is just administrative—think of it as groundwork. The real interview, where an officer reviews your application and asks questions, happens separately at the consulate.
For example, let’s say you want a B-1/B-2 visitor visa. You’ll first fill out the DS-160 form, pay the visa fee, and then set up your appointments online through the U.S. visa system, following their instructions step by step.
Wondering what to bring to your OFC appointment? Always check your confirmation page and the official instructions for your visa type. Usually, you’ll need your valid passport, the DS-160 confirmation page, your appointment proof, and your visa fee receipt. Only bring extra documents if they specifically ask for them—there’s no prize for bringing a stack of papers they don’t need.
To actually book your OFC visit, go through the official website once you’ve finished your application steps. You’ll need details like your passport number and DS-160 confirmation number. Appointment dates can come and go fast, so keep checking until you lock one in.
A few quick tips: Show up on time, stick to the security rules, and only bring what’s on the approved list. Double-check all your details—a simple error in your passport number or DS-160 can cause real delays.
And just to be clear, paying your visa fee or going to the OFC centre doesn’t mean you get the visa automatically. The final decision comes from your consular interview, where they look over everything and decide according to U.S. immigration law.
Bottom line? The OFC appointment isn’t the scary part. It’s just paperwork and biometrics, not the big interview. Make your life easier: follow the official instructions, prepare your documents in advance, and rely on the actual U.S. visa website for updates—not unofficial sources. That way, you’ll stay on track and avoid unnecessary headaches.
